Imus calls women basketball players "nappy-headed hos"

Oh this is charming.
On the April 4 edition of MSNBC's Imus in the Morning, host Don Imus referred to the Rutgers University women's basketball team, which is comprised of eight African-American and two white players, as "nappy-headed hos" immediately after the show's executive producer, Bernard McGuirk, called the team "hard-core hos." Later, former Imus sports announcer Sid Rosenberg, who was filling in for sportscaster Chris Carlin, said: "The more I look at Rutgers, they look exactly like the [National Basketball Association's] Toronto Raptors."
Media Matters also has the video, so make sure to check it out.

I don't understand the Toronto reference. Can someone elucidate?
I don't either, but I know the Raptors are Dead to Stephen Colbert.
I think he should find a reason to put these guys On Notice.
I don't know either. I thought it was an "they look like men" type of insult, and "Raptors" came to his mind because it's an aggressive animal image (as opposed to say Celtics which is more ambiguous). Why am I even trying to parse this. What an asshole.
It's the uniform colors that made him pick the Raptors- red and white uniforms.
It's "Because they're wearing the same color uniform, they look like a bunch of men from this team."
It's awesome how such ugly words can come from such a similarly ugly man. Guys, if you're not gettin' any, there's no need to take it out on "hos", OK?
Ahhhhh. Thanks roymacIII.
Thank google, not me. =)
I didn't get it, either, and since a couple other people didn't, I was curious. Gods know I love researching random trivia, so... google to the rescue. Heh.
Wow. And... "the jigaboos versus the wannabes." Seriously? I do not think I've ever heard that dick Imus speak when he didn't piss me off, so I don't watch/listen, but, seriously? MSNBC needs to issue an apology for that... I'd say fire him, but I think I've heard worse come out of his mouth as his paychecks continue to rise... they won't fire him... he brings in ratings with the ever-ending pile of bullshit that spews forth from his mouth.
Is he drooling in that photo?
I've been observing MSNBC.com's damage control. At first, headlined under "Other Top Sports News" was an article , something like "Imus under fire for controversial comments." It briefly ran down the worst of his barftalk and at the bottom, included this :
MSNBC released this statement in response to the comments, "While simulcast by MSNBC, 'Imus in the Morning' is not a production of the cable network and is produced by WFAN Radio. As Imus makes clear every day, his views are not those of MSNBC. We regret that his remarks were aired on MSNBC and apologize for these offensive comments."
I had to write the Sports Editor to say that while I appreciated their regret and apology, it's disappointing they didn't condemn his comments more strongly. That without explicitly stating they find sexist, racist commentary unacceptable, they're implicitly saying it's allowable. Mentioned I'd be glad to get my sports news exclusively from ncaa.org, wnba.com and nba.com.
I guess he's apologized now, pfft:
"Imus 'sorry' for racist remarks about Rutgers
Controversial talk show described NCAA runners-up as 'nappy-headed hos'"
http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/17982146/
But it took three days?! Tells me there wasn't nearly enough outrage.
the guys at work were just talking about this and they seemed to think that it was hilarious. i tried explaining to them how incredibly racist and misogynist it was, but i don't think that they know what the word "misogyny" means. knowing the people i work with, i shouldn't be surprised.
also, i'd like to say thank you to Al Sharpton.
Hey, df, that link isn't working for me--any chance you could put in the URL?
ack. sorry, here it is:

Thanks!
Can I note what I think is one of the most pernicious ways that people excuse racism?
"That Imus is in trouble for being politically incorrect is certainly not new," said Tom Taylor, editor of the trade publication Inside Radio.
"Politically incorrect"--what does that even mean? What Imus said was racist. But by saying "politically incorrect," Taylor implies that he's some kind of rebellious maverick, instead of a racist idiot spewing the same bullshit that black people have been forced to put up with for over a hundred years. Let's stop being "politically correct" and call a spade a spade: Imus is a racist.
And--dear God, it's snowing. In April. The world is definitely coming to an end.
i live in upstate NY and it's snowing here, too!
what i like about Sharpton's comments is that he points out that the remark was offensive to women, as well. i think that we're more socially trained to look out for racism, and i guess that calling women "hoes" just because you don't like them is common enough that we don't react to it. but i'm offended because of both the racism and the sexism. and i'm offended by his comments about another team who he called "cute girls." guess what, asshole, they're athletes. any woman who dares to step outside of her home is not opening herself up for your judgements of her sexual attractiveness. these women are basketball players and should be judged as such.
i really hope that they get the guy fired. not that i'm expecting it.
if anyone is interested, NOW is running a letter campaign to try to get Imus and McGuirk fired. here's the URL:
http://www.capwiz.com/now/issues/alert/?alertid=9602971&type=CU
Thanks for the NOW action alert link df. For anyone else who wants to send an email / letter, it took me about two seconds.
The "hoes" actually bothered me a lot more than the "nappy-headed". Perhaps because I'm not black. But to me, it seems that "nappy-headed" says "you're ugly because you're black," whereas "hoes" says "you're immoral because you're a woman" (since "ho" means whore, and despite the reality that few prostitutes really choose their livelihoods, and it shouldn't matter anyway, the perception is that a whore is immoral, downright evil, her being somehow sullied by her acts.) "Ho" is a filthy, ugly word to call a woman -- but because it's street slang, it's okay, whereas saying "hard-core whores" would not be. Whatever.
I want to see some acknowledgement that *both* these guys insulted these athletes with a really degrading term for no better reason than that they were female and did not give these guys wood. I want Imus fired, because it's not "politically incorrect" to call an athlete a whore for being unattractive to you -- it's fucking rude. And I want to send the message that casually calling a woman a whore for no good reason on the public airwaves is unacceptable. But as usual it's all about the racism now, and the sexism -- which was a worse insult (I mean, there is a big difference between calling a woman ugly and calling her a whore) -- has been overlooked by many.

I hope he gets fired.
I have to same almost as unnerving as the content of this post is the fact that, given what these women were called, 6 of the first 7 comments were clarifications about the Toronto team's uniforms. WTF?!?!?!
TWO WEEKS? that's it??? what fucking bullshit. what does suspension even DO? it's a two week vacation. no way. not cool.
seriously folks, click on the link i posted before. write a letter.
I have to say almost as unnerving as the content of this post is the fact that, given what these women were called, 6 of the first 7 comments were clarifications about the Toronto team's uniforms and then it was like, 'oh, yeah, and the black women, too.'

I realize I might be reading this out of context, as I can't see the video from my current location. Could Sid be trying to subtly chastize Imus in his comparison to the Toronto Raptors? I actually read it not as they look like men, but that they look like backetball players.
Imus's comments were completely out of line, both racist and sexist, but still acceptable in our society. I think it was horrible for him to say anything like that, not to mention unsportslike, but I also just ended a weekend trip with my in-laws where people either had a name (if they were white) or a color. If society as a whole really gave a hoot about his comments, he'd be fired, if only to put the fear of their jobs in the minds of all the other racist and sexist asshole announcers out there.
WOW! His comments are very out of line, yes like others have been saying "racist and sexist." You make a good point about it being acceptable in our society, I wish I could say that calling women names wasn't acceptable, however it is. Even 5, 6,7, and 8th graders use this type of language with each other; it is absurd!!
When he compared Tennessee and Rutgers' teams, by saying Tennessee's team is cute, while Rutgers' are a bunch of hos, that is degrading and uncalled for. He definitely needed to be fired, or suspensed for longer then two weeks! It sucks to be an atheletic woman sometimes because no matter what sexuality is always brought into picture; however men athletes do not have to worry about these types of comments as much. Society really needs to put their foot down on something like this, but unfortunately it probably will never happen.
Hey first of all i dont think Don Imus should be banned or even penalized for his comments.Should it matter if a person would say it in their own home but cant say it out in public. We as people need to stop acting so sensitive.Granted what he said was wrong but that shit was funny, because although they are not hoes, the shit was true.hahahaha.Disagree if you must but i wouldnt damn care.People should be allowed to say what they want and also deal with the consequences directly not judged from the whole world.I wouLdnt of apologized but does it make it right because i am a black man.I would of told the rutger basketball team to their face, excluding the hoe part, because it is personally disrespectful, but regardless i hear people all the time describing others like this.
Black people make comments about white people all the time and no one says shit, but instantly when a white guy say something which is stereotypicsl he is all of a sudden a racist. You know who is a racist, the kramer dude off of Seinfeld.Wheter Don Imus is a racist or not,he shouldnt be called one strictly off his comment on that day.I am more pissed off to see him apologize. If the rutger basketball team had a problem with it then they should of found him.
Another thing why is it that everyone goes on Rev Jackson and Rev Sharpton show for some type of damn racial forgiveness.I personally say Fcuk that.If you say something that is fcuked up you are personally responsible for it and these two people cant do anything, so stop going to these dang shows when people say something wrong, be a man and say sorry if you are truly sorry, or just say fcuk it.
Who's going to apologize for their comments on the Duke rape case since all charges have been dismissed? Come on people - take responsibility for your wrongness.
To me, the most surprising thing is that enough people watch that semi-intelligible blowhard to make this a big deal.
These women are smart, strong, motivated people, leaving most of us in the dust. Just having talent doesn't cut it. Work and work and work, determination, willingness to come back from defeat, to learn from errors, to play through pain.
To think they are being smeared as too damaged by some hot air from a moron is a far worse insult than anything Imus said.
