This is a joke, right?

oj_fox.jpgThis has to be some kind of new, I don't understand Fox programming, November fools joke, right? I mean, there's no way in the actual world that OJ Simpson would write a book about how he didn't murder his ex-wife and her friend, but if he did it would have gone like this. And no one would ever put an interview about this on television, certainly not a two-night special. Right? Right? Someone debunk this for me. Hurry, I'm getting scared.

I read about this this morning and I couldn't believe it either. Yeesh.

I heard about the book a while ago, and like most people (I would hope, anyway) thought it was in extremely poor taste.
I didn't know about the TV special, though. I guess from a media standpoint it makes sense--remember how much time was devoted to that not-so-high-speed pursuit of the famous white Ford Bronco, or the endless hours of the trial run on Court TV? A lot of sheeple tuned in to that, and probably will to this, too, if only out of morbid curiousity. That's money in the bank as far as the TV execs are concerned. They, like OJ himself, are just trying to milk his fame (or infamy, if you prefer) for a few dollars more.
Money makes the world go round. *sigh*

I heard about this book a month ago on NPR (I think). OJ was found innocent so the case is closed, apparently. Supposedly the book goes into very specific and gory details regarding the murders. There was also something about OJ's plans regarding the money he makes from the book. He's doing something that would protect his profit from his wife's family, should they sue for any reason. I don't remember the details. Someone with more time than I have to spare could look it up on the NPR archives. Anyway, this is terribly disturbing.

Gah! Just when Fox starts to rise in my estimation.. it crashes back down to zero.

Totally saw an ad for the special last night, but unfortunately I was on the phone so it was muted. Has anyone else seen the teasers and listened to the dialogue?

Well, NBC interviewed him too. I saw a Dan Abrams interview on "Today" this morning. I just turned off the TV in disgust.

His children are 18 and 21 now. I can't believe he's doing this to them.

On the other hand, maybe I can believe it.

Yep. I predict huge ratings.

Um, people. I believe I asked someone to tell me this is a joke. Still waiting.

I saw a headline regarding this on Yahoo. To me it seems like a really bad idea considering many people still think he did commit the murders. It also seems inconsiderate in a way because this is probably that last thing that the victim's families would want to hear about. Personally i think he's just looking for ways to keep himself in the spotlight.

gag. Sexism doesn't work in elections any more. It's no longer a populist stance. When will it start showing in the media?

I saw a commercial for it on TV last night. I didn't get to hear the whole thing though, just saw the big flashy letters. Ugh. I guess he can say whatever he wants now because he was found innocent and you can't try someone twice for the same crime. Why would you do this? It only further incriminates him in my mind.

Yes, Jen, this is a joke because Fox news is a joke.

i guess implying that your a murderer (or basically admitting it) is better than not being famous.
*sigh* dont you just love hollywood?

I can't believe this crap! OJ needs to sit his azz down. He must be in desparate need for money and FOX must be in need for attention.

[0+] Author Profile Page tink said:

Abusers tend to be so totally self-involved; he probably thinks he deserves this attention, because of all the "pain" he's had to carry.

I saw an interview w/ bell hooks soon after the initial verdict. She was asked if she saw it as a victory for black people. She made a face, and said something like "No. What happened it what usually happens; the rich guy won."

I wish this interview were a joke, Jen. I wish, I wish, I wish(I am clicking my heels but nothing's happening).

"Why would you do this?"

For the money, of course.

Off topic, but I made quite a few bucks betting on the verdict.

I watched about 90% of the trial, and I knew there was no way they were going to convict him. Most of the people who were certain he was going to be convicted got their info from the news, which was often much different from what actually happened in court.

sadly it's true. it's really, really grotesque. possibly the grossest display of opportunism i can think of, on both OJ's and Fox's parts. i was wondering if this was some sort of cathartic confession he needed on some deep psychological level, but the exploitation of the proceeds from the book pretty much wiped that possibility away. can you imagine what his kids are thinking?

On the positive side, maybe the Goldmans will finally be able to collect some of that $38 million he owes 'em. Surely he didn't volunteer to write a book and make TV appearances for free?

What a fiasco.

This is complete insanity. I saw the commericals after already hearing about the book. Not only has he now admitted his guilt, but he was already found guilty in civil court. UGH. I can't believe this guy became a rallying figure for civil rights.

To me it seems like a really bad idea considering many people still think he did commit the murders.

Er, he did. This would constitute proof, if anyone was actually in doubt. Crassness has attained new heights--or, rather, depths. Truly, we are living in a post-civilized society.

PL, when was it ever civilized?

Gotta agree that this is disturbing, and--as someone who still thinks the prosecution did not prove guilt beyond a reasonable doubt--I have a hard time seeing his recent behavior, here and in the ads for his porn video, as anything other than a tacit admission that he is either guilty or a complete sociopath who could just as easily have been guilty.

Disgusting.

Peace,

TH

Isn't it interesting that the ways celebrities are encourgaed to act and the way sociopaths actually do act are pretty much identical?

Or maybe this is a clever scheme to smoke out the real killer that Fox and OJ have cooked up together?

Jen, I thought this was a joke too when my boyfriend told me about it.

This man got away with murder, and now he's proudly waving it in our faces. I hope the jury that acquited him is feeling very proud of themselves today - two people were brutally killed and the man who did it got away scott free.

Yep, it is a joke. On our pathetic justice system.

OJ is just BEGGING to be murdered by some deranged individual.

Fox Broadcasting and Fox News are seperate entities. Fox News has nothing to do with this OJ special.

Both ReganBooks and Fox TV are owned by the News Corporation (Rupert Murdoch - Chairman and Chief Executive Officer).

NewsCorp also owns Fox News.

"Why would you do this?"

Perhaps this is the beginning of the attempt to rehabilitate OJ. I predict a spot on Oprah and Larry King next.

People should really read the comments by the woman who published the book... very interesting.

"NewsCorp also owns Fox News."

True, but in this situation, the left hand and the right hand are each allowed to do their own thing independently.

[0+] Author Profile Page donna darko said:

Neither are independent from Murdoch who owns both. His media consultant is Roger Ailes. Ailes is CEO, Chairman, and President of Fox News and is responsible for the Willie Horton ads.

These people are CLASSY.

whoa sarahs,i was not expecting that. people are friggin wierd

Donna Darko, I was hoping you would explain your earlier point. That being (I believe) that Fox News is a joke because Fox Broadcasting is going to play the OJ interview. I don't see what you see.

[0+] Author Profile Page donna darko said:

No, Dave, I said this indeed must be a joke since Fox News is a joke then you said this is on Fox broadcasting which is different and I said same difference because Murdoch/Ailes control everything. :)

Well, we could argue over who controls what at NewsCorp but it has become a moot point anyway. Fox Broadcasting announced that they are pulling the OJ television special and the book deal.
