If you haven't read this amazingly written--though terrifying--profile of Girls Gone Wild founder Joe Francis, go do it. Now.
Not only does Francis physically assault reporter Claire Hoffman...
Joe Francis, the founder of the "Girls Gone Wild" empire, is humiliating me. He has my face pressed against the hood of a car, my arms twisted hard behind my back. He's pushing himself against me, shouting: "This is what they did to me in Panama City!"It's after 3 a.m. and we're in a parking lot on the outskirts of Chicago. Electronic music is buzzing from the nightclub across the street, mixing easily with the laughter of the guys who are watching this, this me-pinned-and-helpless thing.
Francis isn't laughing.
He has turned on me, and I don't know why. He's going on and on about Panama City Beach, the spring break spot in northern Florida where Bay County sheriff's deputies arrested him three years ago on charges of racketeering, drug trafficking and promoting the sexual performance of a child. As he yells, I wonder if this is a flashback, or if he's punishing me for being the only blond in sight who's not wearing a thong. This much is certain: He's got at least 80 pounds on me and I'm thinking he's about to break my left arm. My eyes start to stream tears.
...It also looks like he rapes a drunk 18 year old.
Eventually, [Jannel] Szyszka says, Francis told the cameraman to leave and pushed her back on the bed, undid his jeans and climbed on top of her. "I told him it hurt, and he kept doing it. And I keep telling him it hurts. I said, 'No' twice in the beginning, and during I started saying, 'Oh, my god, it hurts.' I kept telling him it hurt, but he kept going, and he said he was sorry but kissed me so I wouldn't keep talking."
Charming, huh? And to think, this man is dictating what sexuality is to a generation of young men!
Both Pandagon and Feministe have up great analyses of the piece, and I don't know how much more I can add.
I will say this: Francis' behavior--his violence against women, his rage at Hoffman for daring to write an honest piece, and his belief that he’s doing all this in good fun--is the scariest combination of privilege, money and misogyny that I’ve ever seen. It's like male privilege on crack.
The only thing that's as disturbing as Francis' sense of entitlement to women's bodies (and anything else he wants) is the "boys will be boys" forgiveness poured on him by his friends, fans, coworkers, and even police.
And folks think there's no such thing as a rape culture?
TAKE ACTION: One of my favorite stations, Comedy Central, airs Girls Gone Wild commercials. This is bullshit. Here's the contact info for Comedy Partners, the company that owns Comedy Central. Let them know that they shouldn't support this asshole. (Now that I think of it, are they still showing army recruiting commercials?)

It's frightening that even in the 21st century--even when the feminist movement has made such strides in changing the general public's perspective on acceptable behavior toward women--this sort of shit is still going on. Hopefully, those who are "fans" of Joe Francis and GGW will begin to realize what a horrific scumbag he really is.
Reading that article made me physically ill, but at the same time, Hoffman should be commended for exposing Francis's insane misogyny and rather sickening sense of entitlement. It scares me that people like him actually exist.
"Charming, huh? And to think, this man is dictating what sexuality is to a generation of young men!"
Equally frightening: he's dictating what sexuality is to a generation of young women, as well. There are actually college women out there who WANT to be on Girls Gone Wild, who think they need to get drunk and objectify themselves in order to maintain the attention of those very boys.
That article was just plain scary. I don't know much about Girls Gone Wild (except that I don't like it) but that guy sounds like an actual menace.
Oh, and to the best of my knowledge, Comedy Central prides itself on pissing everyone off regardless of race, gender, religion, or creed, so I doubt they'll pull the commercials. Still, good luck with that - I'd love to see them come to their senses.
dmrnj85, good point. scary point, but good.
I'm fucking shaking after reading that. Our world is so fucked up. I honestly can't believe that the production company had the cojones to turn a rape accusation into a compliment on the jackass's penis size. Shows how seriously they take such matters, eh?
If they come through my college town, I'm going to be there with FMLA and the local news.
And the weirdest thing about all this is, I know enough men that openly gobble this shit up, and on some bizarre level, actually believe that it has something to do with real sexuality.
I wonder why she didn't press charges.
I think a broader and scarier issue here is that Francis and is cronies openly flaunt what he does, knowing that he can't get caught because of the pull he has with his crew and law enforcement. In response to the rape allegations, his attorney finished his statement by commenting on Francis's allegedly-large penis!
"Yeah... it's not his fault that virginal girl couldn't handle the awesome power of his huge cock. We're going to go put babies on spikes now, and since Joe shits money, there's nothing you can do about it! Ha HA!"
I suppose that's the insult to injury. This guy seems to know that no one can touch him, and so far, he's been right.
redemmie:
I am speculating wildly here, but I suspect that she might have thought that she would lose credibility as a reporter of his actions.
I'll bet that, more likely than not, the next time this psycho rapist swine's name comes to my attention it'll be because he's landed in jail. That in itself would be just fine with me, but I fear the reason he's going to be there is because some girl who objected to being raped has turned up dead.
That rape story is very telling of what a sick man this guy is. They have a routine where they lure teenage girls onto their bus to shoot porn with sex toys and with the girls having sex with the cameraman. They lure this girl onto the bus, and then discover that the sex toy hurts her, leading to the discovery that she's a virgin. Then, Francis decides that instead of having her have sex with the cameraman, he will assert his privileges, because he gets off on deflowering a girl. So he rapes her off camera so that there is less chance of a prosecution.
How perverse! I am happy the writer exposed this injustice. I would have pressed charges. Perhaps if they have some sort of media attention informing young women why they should not work with the Girls Gone Wild crew, sort of like a commercial on college campuses, or a mini-documentary exposing this guy.
I did not read anywhere in the arcticle if Szyszka took her case to court. It is disturbing the father told no one after the 'alleged' rape incident. Until it goes to court it is always alleged, even though I believe it happened, and more than likely many times before. This writer would make a good witness to testify on his character.
If she didn't press charges, I really wish she would.
When I was younger, I baught a GGW video. But, I'm never going to again. I'm boycotting his videos. I'll comedy central is not the only channel that carries Frances's commericals. BET, FX, E, and Spike carry his commericals too.
I doubt I would have pressed charges either. Let me explain why.
Claire Hoffman is apparently an entertainment journalist. She might not necessarily want to make a move to serious news, or a different publication, but I think it's reasonably likely.
So she gets this assignment interviewing Francis, and he turns into this big psycho, freaking out when it becomes apparent that this article is not going to be flattering for him. She perseveres, and writes this amazing piece that is the most emailed article on the website.
She's showed that she can bring the story, and stick to her guns when she's threatened. Nicely done, Claire Hoffman. If you are trying to make a move to more serious journalism, I hope your work on this article gets you there. If you just wanted to do good work on this piece, job well done.
It is commendable that Ms. Hoffman wrote this story. However, as troubled as I was by Francis actions, I was equally upset that Ms. Hoffman did not press charges.
How many times is this guy going to violate women and get to walk away??!!
I would strongly encourage Ms. Hoffman to move forward with assault charges.
I like porn.
I suspect that statement won't make me very welcome here, but it's relevant.
I enjoy watching people have sex. I'm well aware that most of what I see on the screen is "Don't Try This At Home" - that's part of the thrill.
For me, porn is about sex - a socially-acceptable outlet for a streak of voyeurism. If I'm watching porn, I'm alone and masturbating. I've never sat with a bunch of other guys, pointing, cheering, and laughing.
Judge that how you will, but it's the reason that I've never been interested in "Girls Gone Wild".
"Girls Gone Wild" is not about sex. It's about seeing what you can get the drunk chick to do for you. It's about the pointing, cheering, and laughing. Even the commercials ooze an attitude of "look what we can get these hot, stupid, drunk bitches to do for a lousy t-shirt".
Call me crazy, but I think there's a difference between watching paid performers have sex and treating drunk college girls like trained seals.
I think it says something that Girls Gone Wild seems horrifically misogynistic to someone who likes "regular" porn.
In any case, I'm not at all surprised that the man responsible for those movies and commercials is like this. It's clear that his sense of entitlement and invulnerability (not to mention his utter contempt for women, which only adds to the above) is leading him to self-destruct - attacking the reporter who's doing a profile piece on you isn't the smartest move you can make. Unfortunately, he's already done more than his share of damage, and he'll do more before he finally crashes and burns.
I agree; Hoffman needs to press charges, it would encourage that young woman to go forward with the rape trial. She is an intelligent woman, her career insecurities should not hold her back from gaining justice. who knows what else could unravel if someone makes a move?I would love to see that happen-this guy needs to fall.
I have created a petition to send to Comedy Central asking them to take the Girls Gone Wild ads off the air:

Please sign and forward.
Thank you.
I am glad that reporter wrote that article.
Makes me wonder what his childhood was like. Where does all his anger come from? I bet he was abused. In my observations, male victims, who are not treated, often become victimizers. I would bet he had a shitty life and now is helping others to the same place.
