Was she sent to her room without dinner during the break?

I just don’t get these people who get all worked up about the value of the life of a few cells yet they don’t seem to give a damn about the many lives that continue to be brutally destroyed as a direct result of the policies of their government and their favorite president.

what is her name?
seriously, she's been on "the view" for a while now, but she is completely unmemorable that i only recognize her as "oh yeah that girl from survivor or something" i dont think Joy Behar even knows her name, and they probably sit next to each other every morning to get their makeup done..that's about the only thing keeping me upset at her "8th grade debate team" speech. she has lots of emotions.

What about the value of the life of the 12-year-old girl?

Oh wait, she doesn't matter... because she's already been born, AND she's female.

Haha, I think it's Elizabeth something or other. But you make an excellent point. Why are WE the shrill, hysterical ones?

"Elisabeth Hasselbeck represents the conservative position on The View, defending creationism and opposing euthanasia. She was a supporter of President George W. Bush's reelection campaign and delivered a primetime speech at the 2004 Republican National Convention."

I'm not a big fan of The View, but I really, really love the disdainful look that Joy Behar gives to the little whiney girl during her speech. Also the way Barbra Walters pretty much told her to shut up until she could discuss issues like an adult.

I agree, what a whiner...I was expecting her to stomp her feet! She did do the popular teenage 'Whatever' eye roll after all.

Umm...is that Lisa Loeb to the right of Barbara?

She reminds me of the kinds of girls I would debate abortion with as a kid. Her argument has no logic, and her premise that life begins at conception is not accepted by the scientific community. The idea that this will be "the end to all life" is absolutely absurd, and she doesn't even try to back it up.

Elizabeth Hasselbeck represents not only the "conservative" view on the "The View," but a privileged view--she's been wealthy all her life and she's married to a professional (foot or base) ball player. Like so many of her expressed opinions on the show, she cannot formulate a cogent or even linear argument. She represents the tokenism that the far right has come to expect in popular media--a voice, even though its an uneducated and incindary voice--in mainstream forums. She and her elk need to be challenged again and again until the purveyors of common sense, recognize their inappropriatness at the table (whatever happened to Elizabeth Dole as conservative female representative? She could hold an argument)

i've got to second a sincere appreciation of barbara walters' role in this ridiculousness... she totally reminded me of my grandma - calm, collected, not really willing to put up with bullshit... and hecka funny

bring back Star Jones!

I, sadly, have to admit that I used to watch The View several years back. While I don't completely agree with Hassleback, Barbara Walters' attitude towards her pissed me off. I have seen Joy Behar throw one hell of a fit on more than one occasion, insulting guests, interrupting people, and flat out telling her co-hosts to shut up. Yet never in the entire time I saw her do that did Barbara Walters repremand her, let alone talk to her as though she were a child. If the opinions (and the bullshit that goes along with them) of the younger co-host aren't going to be respected as much as the older ones, then what is the point of having a younger person on the show?

i don't believe in abortion so that is why I won't have one. however, i do no have the right to tell some other woman what she can, or cannot do with her body. neither does that crazy bitch. if you want to prevent abortions then make the morning after pill over the counter.

ok, yes, Barbara Walters is difficult for me to listen to but that's not new.

However, "The View's" new "BARBIE DOLL" is horribly naive and ignorant on this issue.

According to BARBIE's passionate argument about the value
of life from "conception" one could argue that the practice of freezing embryos is nothing short of child abuse.

I can see the report now on 60 MINUTES, "Children discovered locked in freezer by parents!"

I mean, according to Barbie's logic, an embryo in a fertility clinic is nothing short of a frozen baby. Right?

And freezing a child is a medical intervention in the life process which often times results in the death of a "child".

Barbie, with all her passsion would have to argue that fertility clinics are playing Russian Roulette with children's lives.

I sure hope Barbie is crusading against these family factories where "children" are being frozen and their lives are being gambled for the sole purpose of bringing selfish happiness to men and women in their attempts to create families.

Yes, these immoral people should be shunned right along with all those other people who say they don't want or can't house an embryo in their uterus.

I say, support Barbie! Stop the abuse. Free the frozen children....Yes.. set them free!

Implant all the unwanted embryos in Barbie's uterus. Last I heard, women can carry seven to term. Barbie , with all her passion, could certainly handle that.

Go Barbara. That girl was in desperate need of a spanking, no?

I don't watch the View (it kills brain cells, doesn't it? ;)) but even if Barbara doesn't always rein someone in, that doesn't mean she never should.

It's not appropriate for a member of a "discussion" to railroad everyone and act like a spoiled kid. Gah! TV really is going downhill in the news department.

I don’t like her either and that was before I saw this clip.
But I tell ya what. It’s enough for me to start a serious campgain to get rid of her. I want her off the fucking show and now.

Anyone interested in organizing a campgain to rid the show of her, email me at acupofjane_at_ gmail_dot_com

I’m serious. I’ve given her every chance but now I’ve had my fill of her. I’m a long time watch of the View. Years in fact, I TiVo it often. I worship Barbara the way Oprah does. I want to be her and she happens to resemble my favorite Aunt (whom I also worship) in looks, mind and heart. This aunt, whom I was very close to died around the time I started watching. Joy happens to resemble the attitude of by best friend in college. She was a sassy, feisty, funny, irreverent older women who went back to get her degree after she raised her kids and I wanted to be her protégée. She died of breast cancer. And Merdith is very much like my mother and my other favorite aunt. So for me the show is extremely personal. I love these women and what they have to say. I even really liked Star Jones but now… (that’s another post) When Elizabeth first started on the show (yes I’ve been watching that long) I was thrilled that they kept I young person in the crowd. While she didn’t represent me exactly (she looks like a Barbie Doll, I look like Rosie, I was living with a guy I wasn’t sure I was going to marry while step parenting his special need kid though I had none of my own. She had a good job and a career and probably an education while I was schlepping at Subway and praying to get a class in a year) at least she was younger than the other women and they sort of seemed to have a guanine friendship.

Then she opened her mouth. And every day on every topic she has continued to be an embarrassment. To women in general, to my generation, to the perevious generation and to feminists in general, and she is just rude. She doesn’t mean to be but this is not the job for her. She is bad at this job.

Help Liz Leave!!

Thank God Rosie’s coming! I can’t wait!!

Wow. What the hell kind of correlation is she trying to draw between the government "staying out of our bodies" and universal healthcare? She is a raving lunatic! I have never wanted to punch someone in the face as much as I do right now - HER. Get her off the show.

go barbara! just because she screamed and interupted joy doesn't mean her opinion is right... nothing pisses me off more than those people who mistake volume for reason.

i love how conservatives talk about liberals being closed-minded nut jobs...

Renee, would you be calling her Barbie if she was saying that abortion should be legal with no exceptions? I'm not saying you should agree with her or that you shouldn't point out any problems with her argument or the way in which she handled herself, but it bugs the hell out of me when women resort to calling one another names rather than focusing on the real problems when we disagree. Yes, she's blonde, young, wealthy, and thin, but is that really what makes her opinion invalid? If a young woman of similar means and appearance expresses pro-choice views are they invalid as well?

She certainly should have presented herself in a more calm and rational matter, but I really don't see how she acted any different than the rest of them do everyday. If nothing else, it is a good reminder why I quit watching that crap.

Personally, I couldn't care less if the show's producers and/or ABC execs think they need a conservative voice on "The View" for "balance." But they should at least find someone who doesn't just spout the party line and resort to using outright LIES to support her OPINION. It's a show aimed at WOMEN, so they have a responsibility to ensure that their hosts stick to medically accurate information. Whether Hasselbeck is merely ignorant, or is resorting to outright deceit in order to further her own ideological agenda, ABC needs to step in and make sure their hosts are informed and stick to the FACTS. (What the hell does she get paid for!?) Especially when pro-contraception groups have such a hard time getting FDA approval for OTC EC. Shit like this does nothing but hurt women, and by allowing their hosts to spread demonstrable lies,* ABC is doing a disservice to the millions of women that watch the show.

Anyway, if anyone wants to contact ABC, there are individual contact forms for each host (as well as a fourth one for the producers) here: http://abc.go.com/daytime/theview/index.html.

I also faxed a copy to Anne M. Sweeney who, according to Hoover’s, is the Co-Chairman of Disney Media Networks and President, Disney-ABC Television Group. (See: http://www.hoovers.com/abc/--ID__10290--/free-co-factsheet.xhtml). That’s about all I could find, unfortunately.

* To the trolls: No, EC does not cause abortion, it prevents pregnancy. See: http://ec.princeton.edu/questions/ecabt.html

Noname, we also agreed that vandalism wasn't a mature way to spread the message, as I recall. :)

Manda, I think Renee was pointing out that she's blonde, thin, wealthy, and young (aka "Barbie") because priviledged WASP women aren't very likely to be raped or molested and forced to carry a baby to term. I'm not saying that makes her opinion invalid, so to speak, but it is fair to mention it. It's not unlike when single men are against abortion - well, that's all well and good, but they don't have to deal with the consequences! I'm sure that Ms. Elizabeth can easily afford birthcontrol and if she ever did get raped and changed her mind about abortions, she could probably afford air fare to another country that isn't quite so closed-minded.

But not all women have those priviledges.

That's just my take ohat Renee meant. :)

Previewing your Comment

to Manda,

I will always call ignorance out on the mat. "BARBIE" was a name given to a "doll" that has no brain. Today's Barbies are beginning to resemble real people (or do I have that backwards?)
At any rate, Barbie Dolls have brown, red and black hair and sometimes even brown skin.

WOW, how big of Mattel! (Interesting side note here....Mattel hasn't created a President Barbie which is a little weird. Oh yeah, wait...brainless presidents or presidents in general have only been male…but I digress…the fact is a woman president wouldn't sell.)

And The View, like Mattel, is all about ratings because ratings bring in the dough. So, while it's brilliant to have Liz/Barbie
on The VIEW... in terms of bringing in money, it doesn't render Liz capable of putting forth and informed argument. Her opinion and passion are based in ignorance.

It's not about Liz's blonde hair….

Quite frankly, if Liz (and Barbara Wa Wa for that matter) had admitted that they lacked the necessary information to debate the topic of Emergency Contraception I would not be calling anyone on the View "Barbie."

But they opened the discussion without knowing the facts and I would be remiss if I didn't point it out. On this issue, they were working without a brain.

And, in answer to your question, if they said that abortion should be legal with no exceptions would I still call them Barbie if they couldn't deliver a medically accurate and sound argument for their position.

Abortion is never easy. It is never a first choice. But for all kinds of reasons, medically safe abortion is a necessary reality. Non-Barbies know that.

But The View wasn't discussing abortion..they were discussing EC. And Liz, with all her Barbie qualities made the mistake of opening her mouth. She made the whole discussion about abortion when in fact Emergency Contraception isn't abortion. She shoulda shut up and listened so she could learn something about fertilization vs conception and what actually constitutes abortion.

Her passion is blinding her to medical fact and that is far more dangerous then any pill.

My personal bias here is that I get totally pissed when people talk about choice like they know anything about what it was like back "in the day" when women didn't have a choice. My dad had to sign a note giving my mom permission to take birth control pills.

But that was only after I, along with my four sisters, (raised in the pro-life tradition of the Catholic church) remember when we almost lost our mom after she locked herself in our bathroom and self-induced with a knitting needle. My seven year old sister (the oldest of us five) cleaned blood off the ceiling that day.

Big difference between taking a pill and experiencing an abortion..especially if abortion is illegal and done in a bathroom.

Liz's "passion" is rooted in her ignorant and indistinguishable understanding about what constitutes human suffering. Her argument is that preventing conception is tantamount to such human suffering. Her passionate argument on this is about as substantive as the fights my own barbie dolls had on our living room floor back in 1968.

So, yes, Liz will remain a Barbie until she goes and gets a fricken brain.

Passion is Compassion severed

Elizabeth is the reason why we need abortions. The reason why she's so uptight is because she probably had a mom who made her regret she ever lived.
