Laughable quote of the day

Dr. Andrew von Eschenbach, Bush nominee for head of the FDA, at his confirmation hearings yesterday:

Von Eschenbach said he decided to consider allowing women 18 and older to buy the pills without a doctor's prescription "not on a political ideology, but on a medical ideology."

Uh huh.

He also said 18 was a good age restriction partly because that is the age at which it’s legal to buy cigarettes, so it would be an easy age for pharmacists to remember.

Yeah. He must have just forgotten that Plan B has actually been proven safe for women ages 16 and 17, too.

Who knew pharmacists were so stupid.

Ann, do you have a reference for the "proven safe for women ages 16 and 17" claim? I'd like that for my archives.
