A "Bear-foot & Pregnant" teddy bear...
My initial reaction when I saw this was that it was just kind of cheesy and dumb.
But an op-ed in the Vermont Guardian says there's more to it:
For many women, the phrase “barefoot and pregnant remains a potent reminder of a very recent societal expectation that they stay in their place — the home — and quietly reproduce....Poking fun at these challenges allows young women to laugh them away as somehow irrelevant. But ignoring these hard-won rights certainly will make them go away. Are we taking a teddy bear too seriously? No. Viewing such challenges through cutesy images and Vaseline-smeared lenses dumbs down our sensibilities at a time when women need to stay sharp and smart.
Thoughts?

The first thing I thought about this was that it was ridiculous and dumb. The pickle is funny. I saw it as poking fun (in a cheesy way) at the stereotype that women are home-bound incubators, and while I would never buy it, I could see how some would find it a funny gag.
boy, i sure hope that teddy bear has a husband so Wal-Mart can sell it!
I'm old enough to remember the 50s and that's where we're headed: "marching proudly backwards to the future."
For a hilarious satire of all this, check out "The Department of Homeland Decency: Decency Rules and Regulations Manual." It's at www.homelanddecency.com
I guess we're seeing a back lash of people who are upset that the original goals of feminism (mutual respect and equal opportunity) has given way to man-hating and boy-bashing and the change of public policy discriminating against anyone male.
Feminists of the past were fighting for what's right.
Feminist of present fight for rights for women only.
Men and women today want rights for both men and women, and male-hating and boy-bashing will seperate the fair-minded men and women from the feminist.
I learned about the bear from Air America, who was hawking it for Mother's Day. Humor is a subjective thing, and I am irreverend about almost everything, but is this really funny? And are they making a bear called Down Pickin' Cotton?
Why does everyone have to be picking on bears? First it was the pervert sex bear (linked on here sometime last year), then the young girl celebrated for going out and shooting a bear (early this year?), and now the barefoot and pregnant bear. We are just trying to get along and eke out a living, just like you. All this hate just has to stop. Go out and hug a bear today.
Here's the thing. This is cute and funny on the surface and also annoying and offensive but we can see that because we are educated folks who are interested in things like feminism, equality, etc.
I work with at-risk youth who would look at this and not think twice about women being barefoot and pregnant just because that's how it is supposed to be in their world. Except when they are in my class and hopefully seeing a different side of the world. So I am less concerned with offensiveness than I am with this really being more of a model that kids think they need to follow or support. It will help narrow their options.
So beyond finding this mildly offensive and a terrible example of how people should think of their options in life, this scares the heck out of me, to think that probably my students will buy this toy for their daughters. No, not sons - it's a girl bear, and thus obviously a girl's toy.
its just a stuffed bear,,,,
