Schwarzenegger proposes shift for female inmates.

Our very own gubernator is proposing shifting 40% of California's female inmate population to neighborhood correctional centers.

The plan for female convicts is in the state budget the governor proposed last month.

It calls for about 4,500 female inmates to be able to live closer to their families and receive education, job training, drug and alcohol counseling.

The new centers would be secure facilities run by private companies under contract to the state. Only inmates convicted of nonviolent crimes would be eligible. Some prisoners would be allowed to have their children live with them.

Sounds dandy, but his main motivation is to free up space for the already overcrowded prison system. His long-term plan is to use bond money to build more prisons, because you know, the whole prison industrial complex is REALLY doing the trick.

dudes, he is actually doing something that appears to be a better situation for the women and a better chance at life yet you still cast it in a negative light. cum on, u should have been patting him on the bulge for this one, not throwing stones.

On first glance, it does sound like a positive change for the women in question. However, what concerns me is the fact that these will be privately run. It's really hard to prevent abuses, or enforce rules, when you go to privatized services.

i think the point is that, while it, indeed appears to be a better situation, it is, in the end, not so...

next time, before you post some bs response about how everyone her is so full of it, read the fucking article:

By moving 4,500 women into community beds, officials could free up space for the overflow of male inmates, providing temporary relief while Schwarzenegger pushes his proposal to build new prisons with bond money.

perhaps sami could have done more and quote this crucial part of the story, but perhaps she didn't anticipate how addicted the cliffs notes version of everything some people can be.

yeah... and txfeminist, you're on target with that... check the record of private prisons and corrections solutions - records of abuses, lack of medical care, unchecked profiteering and corners-cutting...

peace and blessings

puck, please wipe the brown stuff off your nose and upper lip again, the crust is building up.

Contrary to waht you believe the quote you pulled out does nothing at all to disprove the notion that the women will be moving to better conditons. Go buy a book on logic please study up on cause effect relationships.

watch you mouth, child.

don't talk about me or my soul sister sami like that 'cos you don't know either of us... you don't see me attacking you personally, so step off...

as far as casting a negative light on the governator creating a better situation for women...

governor schwarzenegger is not proposing setting up neighborhood correction centers as a long-term solution to the flailing and failing criminal injustice shitstem, but rather as a short-term way to get bodies out of the way so the state can build more facilities to imprison more people - and women are people and women are the fastest growing prison population, so i dare say it's pretty fucking clear this isn't good for women.

thought i might spell it out a little more clearly for you, 'cos you don't seem to get it. more prisons don't get built so inmates can have more space to stretch out, they get built so more people can be locked up and answer phones for mci and build desks and all kinds of shit for free...

consider that we're talking about a state that is ranked 46th in terms of education and leads the country in prison construction.

for more on gov schwarzenegger's role in this fucking out of control juggernaut, check this.

and, while you're at it, check yourself...

Lets get constructive and face facts taht the root issues must be overcome first:

1. end the drug war and free non-violent drug prisoners.
2. end poverty.
3. end illiteracy.
4. Give every man woman and child a tony robin's book.

Puck stop sniffing glue and get with the program. We can't stop the lockdown till we have the root problems addressed.

Puck if u have a better solution then, IM ALL EARS.

here's one idea:
don't pretend that because a lot of things are wrong, that it's worthless to take a stand on any of them...

and if you want to talk about the root causes of why you're scared to smoke your fucking pot, maybe it's because the prison industry is booming and has a huge lobby - from folks like marriott to the prison guard unions... and being "tough on crime" is an easy sell to voters and makes money for the prison industrial complex lobby...

um... and my solution is to dump money into education as opposed to lining ruling class pockets with it... yeah, there's one solution... of many - a revolution is not built on just one thing. another solution is getting real help for those drug users who give stoners who can't spell like you a bad name... and, you know what, i've done that - i've worked in drug rehab centers and i've worked in schools; i'm working with an international faith-based ngo with a large focus on work around aids and the situation in darfur and i'm working with a domestic social and economic rights intiative.

maybe i'm not doing enough, though, 'cos i'm tryin'a get mine right now... but let god judge me, not some kid at the other end of a crt...

so, yeah, i've got some ideas, but it's all about a little story mao once told... about the old man and the mountain... if we each take up little struggles and working hard at them and supporting each other, we can get this world to a better place...

if we come at each other with vociferous bullshit and misspell tony robbins' name while we're at it, we ain't going to get nowhere... more on that later...

and thanks for more of the same - unfounded personal attacks when you can't actually counter what i was pointing out, which is that this is not a step forward for the condition of underpriveleged women in california.

peace and blessings

Your on JJS for his typos. And yet this is coming from someone who types in ghetto slang:

hey, matthew, thanks for weighing in with the personal attacks - what about a comment with some substance?

and, whily you're at it, you could explain what the word "ghetto" means to you...

peace and blessings

ps. i made one comment about spelling - and spelling a name, as opposed to just a typo (like the "Your" that should be a "You're" at the beginning of your snide comment) - out of plenty of comments of substance. what of those? you got anything to say?
