This is pretty horrible stuff. A teenage girl in Iran has been sentenced to death by hanging after she admitted that she accidentally killed a man who was trying to rape her and her niece.
18 year-old Nazanin--who was 17 at the time of the incident--said that she, her niece and their two boyfriends were in a park when they were attacked.
When the three assailants started to throw rocks at the group, the girls’ boyfriends ran away on their motorcycles, leaving Nazanin and her 16 year-old niece Somayeh. Nice guys.
According to reports in the Iranian newspaper, E’temaad, Nazanin told the court that three men had approached her and her niece, forced them to the ground and tried to rape them. Seeking to defend her niece and herself, Nazanin stabbed one man in the hand with a knife that she possessed and then, when the men continued to pursue them, stabbed another of the men in the chest.
Despite Nazanin’s story of self defense, she was given a death sentence.

*prays* Some country please get her out of there and offer her asylum.
Courage deserves better.
Of course, I am somewhat less than surprised that Iran can't stand a strong woman.
second that prayer, kyra...
Unfortunately, the sentence has already been carried out.
damn
Fuck!
The only thing she did wrong was not to make the bastard suffer before he died.
By the way, nice job, boyfriends.
Where is the confirmation that the sentence has been carried out? The article cites a similar situation where a young woman was executed but does not say what has happened to Nazanin.
Nowhere on any human rights websites can I find that the sentence has already been carried out. Where is that information coming from?
People can still be writing letters and signing the petitions at http://www.handsoffcain.org/azioniurgenti/
There is a petition with almost 80 000 signatures to help save Nazanin's life at www.nazanin.ca
or www.petitiononlin.com/Nazanin
I thought I'd read elsewhere that Nazanin has been spared the death penalty, or it has been lifted, or she'd been released.
Creativity means different things in different cultures. For instance, within certain cultures good imitation is deemed to be the apex of creativity. The imagination is then steered to producing with perfection. And again perfection is also a relative term. To the Japanese eye, a lack of symmetry is what creates perfection. For the West, symmetry is associated with harmony and has a high value.
In Western culture there is also an obsession with the new. As global culture is swept up with a similar obsession, so the Western perception of creativity tends to dominate, especially given that the overriding capitalist economy itself is driven by the need for continuous innovation. The challenge is to create a working definition of creativity that addresses both tradition and the future as well as a quality of nurturing the existing and pushes the boundaries into the new.
