Stressed women more likely to miscarry

A new study from University of Michigan says that women who show signs of stress are three times more likely to have miscarriages in the first several weeks of their pregnancy. Yikes.

Previous studies on miscarriages and stress began when women knew that they were pregnant--usually about six weeks after conception. but most miscarriages actually occur within the first three weeks.

The researchers measured stress levels by checking the amount of cortisol--a stress-induced hormone--in women’s bodies.

Very interesting. There has always been a belief that stress can lead to miscarriages, but it was seen more as "old wives' wisdom" than scientific fact.

Exactly ... what they neglect to mention is the relationship between cortisol & progesterone which would add a little logic to their findings.

As corisol levels rise, progesterone levels decrease being used by the body to conteract the damaging effect of corisol.

Progesterone is vital, assiting the placenta to establish during the first 9-12 weeks until the placenta is producing enough to support pregnancy ... but then people have poo-pooed my opinion for years. I just love living long enough to see things come to pass. And I am happy my daughter (currently pregnant) values my thoughts.
