The particular covenant in question is one where God promises Noah to not kill everyone in a big flood again. The conversation goes something like:
Noah: Wow. That sucked.
God: Well, hrrm. I dunno about that whole flooding thing. Here, have a rainbow.
Noah: Wha?
God: Trust me on this one.
Actually the rainbow was a symbol that had it's origins in pegan myth. When northern europe was christianized missionaries grabbed onto a lot of these pegan symbols to ease the transition. The rainbow was originally the bridge wizards traveled to reach valhalla.
Um, racya, I think the rainbow is a naturally-occurring phenomenon, so I don't think pagans invented it. And it's a cool one, so it would make sense if more than one group took hold of it for a symbol...as we're seeing in this news item.
I recall my mother complaining that gays had made it so you couldn't wear a rainbow into church anymore.
Funny. I blame the church.
And this madness runs in the family. My uncle thinks interracial couples shouldn't have children, because it's not fair to the children, because they'll be discriminated against and/or won't fit in.
I *really* hope it's not hereditary.
Racya, I don't think it was the Christians. When Genesis 9:14 -16 was written, there were no Christians.
Charles,
Oh come on. Do your research! The rainbow was a symbol of matriarchal unity during the Paleolithic golden age, when the cult of the great mother reigned and mankind was united in peace and harmony! The idea that the rainbow is a new symbol for gay rights is actually propoganda spread by the right wing in order to strip the meaning from our ancient ways.
(/snark) (I almost managed to type that all with a straight face...)
Actually, I blame the church for making me bi. If they hadn't made me needlepoint all those damn rainbow suncatchers...
"Take the rainbow back?" From whom? From us queers who have clearly sullied its brilliant colors?
Oh, please. "The gays have taken the rainbow! This must stop!"
Criminy. What hooey.
Did anyone listen to "Baby Got Book" (linked in the story)? I laughed so hard I almost pissed my pants.
And you still assert, that neither against gays, nor against gay symbolics the power has nothing.
