Abercrombie steps it up

After an extremely successful (and well publicized) girlcott of Abercrombie & Fitch, the clothing company has come out with some new and improved shirts.

“Brunettes have brains” and “Blonde with a brain” aren’t exactly super-inspiring slogans, but they sure beat “Who needs brains when you have these.”

Unfortunately, you may be a bit off-track.

I am doing research for a book about these companies (among other things) and was surprised to find this t-shirt at one of their stores.

And then, in a flash, I understood, when I saw an employee wearing it.

She was BLONDE, wearing the "brunettes have brains" shirt -- and the pithy remark was right over her ample breasts. Get it, now? They haven't changed a bit, and their store employees are wearing the shirts to make sure everyone's in on their little "joke."

take a look at the men's "attitude tees" also listed on the A&F website.

http://www.abercrombie.ca/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/product_11306_10901_267896_-1_12838

with slogans like...

"I'd rock that"
"you looked better as a freshman" and
"players lounge" ( depicting a threesome - two girls to one guy - of course)

i still find myself dismayed, disgusted and disgruntled by A&F. the messages being communicated through A&F's line of mens tees is more of the same...demeaning and objectifying towards women.

it seems clear to me that A&F responded to all the negative press and complaints regarding their previous shirts by making these new more "girl positive" shirts. merely lip service...i don't ( and won't!) buy it!

hopefully all those "brunettes with brains" out there use them to steer clear of the idiots wearing "you looked better as a freshman" t-shirts.

I don't think it's one bit better. It's still judging women's intellectual capabilities based on their body (or, in this case, hair color choice), and it's encouraging women (brunettes, I suppose) to put down other women who are blondes. (Or, as Molly said, encouraging women to do this to themselves.)

Exactly the same tactic and almost equally offensive, not not "exactly super-inspiring."

Gosh, I sure hope that this isn't the T-shirt that the girls had proposed to Aberwhatever & Fitch after they hosted them because of their girlcott.
