Quick Hit: Powerful Comic Documents Sexism in Medicine

“It felt like these doctors were diagnosing me based on my age and gender, and not my actual symptoms. Young + female = eating disorder. I couldn’t get anyone to take my concerns seriously.”

So begins Aubrey Hirsch’s powerful comic over at The Nib documenting the gender bias in medical diagnosis and treatment. Check it out.

After you finish Hirsch’s comic, head over to Feministing alum Maya Dusenbery’s important/disturbing/outright terrifying read, “Is Medicine’s Gender Bias Killing Young Women?”

Here’s to working toward a world in which women’s pain isn’t psychologized away. Grateful for Hirsch and Dusenbery for helping us down that road.
