Video of the Day: Title IX for Middle and High School Students

Two years ago, Amy Poehler’s Smart Girls teamed up with Alexandra, yours truly, and the rest of the crew at Know Your IX to make a pretty wonky law accessible to the college students it protected, via a short video on the “nine things to know about Title IX in 89 seconds.”

We knew from our experiences organizing with student survivors on our own campuses that when students don’t know their rights, schools tend to trample all over them. A little legal literacy and some magic from the Amy Poehler video team, we found, could go a long way toward making our campuses safer and more just.

But gender violence can happen long before college, and middle and high schools students need legal ed too. So you can imagine how delighted I was yesterday to discover this handy new PSA for younger students from the good folks at SafeBAE:

Sixty-three primary and secondary schools are currently under federal investigations for potential sexual violence-related violations of Title IX. According to the Huffington Post, that number has tripled over the last year, thanks in large part to students’ growing awareness of their rights.

It’s on all of us to keep that change coming. Watch the video and spread the word to your classmates, friends, cousins, kids, grandkids, nieces, nephews, partners, and more. Together, we can all know our IX and make sure gender violence ceases to be part of a U.S. education.
