As a regular Feministing reader and occasional Community contributor, I’m confused and disappointed to see the link and posted meme from Vladentine’s Day Tumblr. Vladimir Putin isn’t exactly the “badass” a feminist blog should be celebrating, especially since it was under his leadership that Russia jailed Pussy Riot and seriously cracked down on feminist artistic expression. Putin’s Russia has stifled democracy and political protests for increased democratization as well as introducing anti-gay legislation that would make it a crime to hold public events for gay rights. Bottom line – Putin is not a world leader that the feminist community should celebrate on any day.

So, seriously, this feminist blog is pro-Putin now? Do you know that Nadezdha Tolokonnikova has been hospitalized due to labor? I know some Feministing posters have implied we should not care about her because she’s married, cisgendered, and childed, but surely you can’t find Putin’s stances on LGBTQ rights progressive, forbidding pride parades, censoring anything viewed as “homosexual propaganda” (i.e. anything that doesn’t tow the Church’s line). Or cracking down on protests and demonstrations in general.

So yeah, cutesy pro-Putin meme. A nice compliment to that community section article a while back about how FEMEN is evil cuz they’re size 8 or whatever? Or more in the line with the anti-Valentine’s Day stance, I really can’t tell.

Linking to a humorous Putin-themed Valentine’s day tumblr that is filled with jokes at his expense was in no way meant as a celebration of Putin. Apologies if it was read that way.
