Quick Hit: White men are afraid, very afraid

Frank Schaeffer, former conservative Christian and right-wing idealogue, has come a long way, baby. In a recent essay for AlterNet, he describes the terror experienced by white men in power in America. And then he calls them out on their bullshit.

He begins:

The American political process is being hijacked by a reckless, whining dangerous gang of psychologically damaged white men who are far-right ideologues. I used to be one of them. It’s time to tell the truth about our white male problem.

He concludes:

The real problem we face is not economics or gun ownership or what happens to Planned Parenthood, but how we can reintegrate a few hurting marginalized white males in Congress and their most ardent delusional supporters into a better future while stopping them from using self-created political stalemate to burn down the house we all share.

Read it and got the chills. Pretty amazing.

    However…2 things:

    1. He didn’t mention sexism once.
    2. This:

“The fear is of a world in which white (mostly) evangelical Republicans lose power… forever. The country has moved on, but the safe Republican gerrymandered districts have not.”

This sh*t makes my head spin. The country has not moved on. Is he kidding? I know the dude has made incredible strides, but, hello, unchecked privilege. Yes, the racism and sexism and heterosexism and classism from the far-right conservatives is glaring, to say the least. But we cannot ignore the more quiet and implicit “isms” that exist on the left. Politics is a game. We have to stop polarizing because it is distracting us. Both sides are COMPLETELY f’ed up, exploitative, and filled to the brim with every “ism” you can count. We need to hold both sides’ feet to the fire. No meaningful, lasting change will materialize until we do.
