#1is2many: Why Vice President Joe Biden made me cry today

I was totally crying earlier and it’s all Joe Biden’s fault. Vice President Joe Biden, a long time advocate for women and girls and strong ally in the fight to end violence against women, announced a new White House PSA today called “1 is 2 many.”  The much needed PSA, featuring all men and everyone from President Obama to David Beckham calls for all of us to do our part in stopping dating violence.

As the White House site says,

1 in 5 women will be the victim of sexual assault while they are in college, 1 in 9 teen girls will be forced to have sex, 1 in 10 teens will be hurt on purpose by someone they are ...

Powerful new Mexican PSAs show cycle of abuse

**Trigger warning**

Here at Feministing we speak very openly about abuse and violence against women.  The cycle of abuse whether inflicted on children, women or men is something that isn’t talked about much outside this space but new “Save the Children” ads in Mexico do an great job of making the connection between being on the receiving end of abuse in your childhood and inflicting it on others as an adult.

It’s my hope that we can have ads like this in the United States and we can shift the narrative about abuse instead of remaining in the realm of victim blaming.  This ad is powerful because it focuses on the abuser and their reasons for abusing which is all ...

Mitt Romney wants the economy to fail

Presumptive Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney is a real debbie downer.  Romney’s entire economic message is centered around his career at Bain Capital (which has serious issues) and not so much his actual record as Governor of Massachusetts (because he has serious issues in his record).  Now it turns out that he wants the American economy to do worse, or at least seem to be doing worse, so that he can continue to attack President Obama for failing to fix it fast enough.

Bloomberg News is reporting that Florida Governor Rick Scott had a talking to by the Romney campaign criticizing his recent ads and positive talk about Florida’s improving jobs numbers.  The Romney camp doesn’t want Governor Scott to highlight ...

Your midday dance break: Ann Miller

Well, your midday watch-someone-else-dance-because-it’s-too-hot-to-move break. It’s the second scorcher in a row here in New York, and I’ve been singing this song – Cole Porter’s brilliant “Too Darn Hot” from Kiss Me, Kate – since I woke up yesterday.

Here’s Ann Miller’s rendition of the song, which includes some serious tapping and some minor stripping. Oh, and by the way, this sparkly pink number is pretty much exactly what we wear when we’re blogging. Obviously.

(Lyrics here.)

Stay cool today, folks.

Sarah Palin, the veepstakes, and the “poisoned well”

When a person becomes the first member of their minority group to do something, they carry an extra burden. They don’t just have to do the job – say, lead a nation – they have to do that job knowing that their performance will be considered representative of how every member of that group would fare in that position.

Obviously, the example that comes to mind most quickly is President Obama; he’s not just the President, he’s a Black President. Or, if you’re Australian, Julia Gillard, who carries the extra weight of representing “how women govern.” President Obama’s additional burden was something that Keith Boykin discussed on “Melissa Harris-Perry” last weekend when we were talking about white voters ...

Your chance to honor an unsung hero in the LGBT community

As you all know, June is Pride Month, and throughout the month, there are LGBT Pride events of all shapes and sizes happening all over the country. This year, the White House Office of Civic Engagement is celebrating by running a Champions of Change competition, where you can vote to recognize individuals who are doing great work in and on behalf of the LGBT community in America.

There’s George Stewart, a veteran who volunteers at SAGE (Services and Advocacy for GLBT Elders) in Harlem. SAGE is the nation’s first full-time advocacy center for GLBT seniors, and Stewart has been working with them for three years.

Or there’s the Redwood String Ensemble, an openly queer and queer-allied quartet at the Oberlin Conservatory of ...
