New Tumblr crush: “Is This Feminist?”

Spoiler alert: The answer is almost always PROBLEMATIC.

Doing science? Sorry. You’re “reinforcing a masculine-supremacist view of intelligence.” Reading? Nope. After all, “the Western canon is white and male-dominated.” Watching sports? Please, that’s a “sort of miniaturized warfare.” Yep, it’s hard being a marginally acceptable feminist full-time. But it’s still feminist to watch Friday Night Lights. So that’s a relief.

Like you said, it’s always a problematic question. The answer I usually resort to is best summed up in this quote (From C.S. Lewis, yes, I know, shut up): What you see and hear depends a good deal on where you are standing; it also depends on what sort of person you are.

Anyone who decries a feminist participating in any activities as ‘Non-feminist’ probably isn’t very feminist themselves. From the right point of view, watching sports, reading, and studying science can be feminist just as much as attending a pro-choice rally, a take back the night rally, or commenting on feminist blogs can be ANTI-feminist. It all depends on why you do it.

I agree however obviously the rips on science and reading, etc. were sarcastic. Quite funny given how often you hear women accused of not being feminist enough for the stupidest of reasons!

When I saw this website, I thought it was making fun of feminists for being overly strict and judgmental. Did anyone else read it this way?

Yes, definitely, but the use of specialized vocabulary indicates the author is one of us. It’s self-deprecating humor.

A bit, but I saw it more as goofing on the overly-analytical type who keep everything in and endless loop of theory, deconstruction, and little else.

Which means I laughed several times.
