What we missed

The great children’s book author Maurice Sendak has passed away at 83. Here is a great clip of him doing an interview with Stephen Colbert (must watch). And a video of Obama reading Where the Wild Things Are to a group of children at the White House. His stuff mattered.

A great piece from Jessica on Adam Yauch’s aka MCA’s feminism.

A outgoing American University student came out as a trans woman in the student newspaper and used it as an opportunity to raise awareness about trans issues and privilege.

Toni Morrison’s new book is coming out today and she discusses home and her new book Home.

“In the good old days, men knew that women are crazy and they knew how to deal with them.”

File under: we can’t make this shit up.

Rev. Jesse Lee Peterson believes that the worst thing to happen in modern society is that women were given the right to vote. Additional important information provided by this genius: Women are sluts (Limbaugh was right) and women are now out of control with power, so much power–vaginal power. (Because fighting for our right to abortion and contraception is showing exactly how much power we have!).

The answer is for us to find God. And clamp down on every right a woman has gained in the last 90 years.

I may not be religious, but I don’t know that God would claim this one.

Someone with these attitudes would never be given access to mainstream media platforms ...

Breaking ground in the war on uterus: Kansas also changes tax code to exclude abortion

Vanessa mentioned yesterday that Kansas passed a bill that forces doctors to lie to their patients if they think the treatment they might provide would hurt the health of a fetus. This same bill holds another provision yet to be seen in the fight against abortion– it prohibits patients from deducting the cost of abortion or any supplemental insurance that might cover the procedure.

The Kansas bill, approved on an 88-31 vote, would prohibit taxpayers from deducting money spent on an abortion or for supplemental health insurance to cover the procedure.

It would bar employers from deducting any money they contribute to a health plan for supplemental insurance coverage of an abortion. It also would ban corporations from taking a tax ...

What Would Happen If Obama Supported Gay Marriage?

While NC tries to ban gay marriage, yesterday Katie wrote about how Joe Biden is being pushed into the closet on gay marriage after expressing his full support on Meet The Press for same-sex marriage.

Within hours of the appearance, a Biden aid  felt the need to clarify the comments and senior Obama campaign advisor David Axelrod tweeted, “What VP said – that all married couples should have exactly the same legal rights – is precisely POTUS’s position,” a comment that Katie felt came off as “pathetic, desperate and spineless.”

Today, as the fallout continues and that political spin machine continues to churn out explanations, clarifications, and  rationalizations, TPM has a great piece exploring the question on every Obama-loving liberal’s ...

Quick Hit: Your Blackness Ain’t Like Mine

In response to Alice Randall’s unfortunately titled NYT editorial “Why Black Women Are Fat” Jamilah Lemieux has written a smart and hilarious rebuttal to the mainstream notion that all black people are the same:

Why are Black women fat?Why are Black men in jail? Why can’t Black women find “good Black men?” Why did I get married, too?

Miserable questions that provide no path to answers—but offer broad sweeping generalizations in their stead—have put a lot of money in the pockets of writers, bloggers (that’s not redundant; not every member of the latter group can rightly be described as the former),  and anyone else who profits off the lucrative “Inherent Deficiency Industry.” Yes, I just made that up. Yes, it ...

North Carolina slated to pass same-sex marriage ban amendment

While the Obama administration continues to flip-flop on the question of same-sex marrage, North Carolina gives us good reminder why we are in desperate need of leaders that take a stand on supporting full rights same-sex couples. North Carolina is slated to vote on an amendment that would essentially ban same-sex marriage along with civil unions. North Carolina is the only state in the region that does not have an all out ban–but same-sex marriage is still illegal through statute. This law would merely make it even harder to repeal, banning marriage and denying certain rights including family protection, health insurance, etc.

And it looks like it is going to pass.

A survey of 1,026 likely Democratic and Republican primary voters showed ...
