Arizona: Pregnancy begins two weeks *before* conception

This has been making the rounds on Facebook amongst some of my friends, and I thought it deserved a place here as well – Arizona has decided that pregnancy now begins two weeks before conception.  Yep.  You read that right.

Arizona Governor Jan Brewer has signed a bill that allows for the state to legislate a ban on abortion after 20 weeks.  However the bill also mandates that pregnancy is considered to begin on the first day of the woman’s last menstrual period.

According to rt.com:  “Under the legislation, the state will be subjecting everyone to new anti-abortion initiatives, as well. The law also includes a provision that makes it mandatory that the state establish a website that publishes images of fetuses at varying stages of development.”
