Maddow interviews the Mississippi OB-GYN fired for being pro-choice

Last night,  Maddow covered the story of Dr. Carl Reddix, the doctor who’s been fired from the state board of health in Mississippi because he’s pro-choice.

Reddix is an African American Harvard and Johns Hopkins-trained doctor from Mississippi. As Maddow points out, Mississippi should be thrilled to have him on their state board of health. Given the state’s enormous public health problems, most notably infant mortality, Reddix is “a godsend.”

Reddix is also associated with an abortion clinic, Mississippi’s only remaining abortion clinic. As Maddow explains, if a woman is undergoing an abortion and something goes wrong, she will be rushed to hospital and put under the direct care of Reddix. So he can save her life. And for this association, the Republican Governor of Mississippi has removed Reddix from the state board of health.

Last night, Maddow interviewed Reddix and tried to find an explanation for the renewed and newly enthusiastic determination to restrict reproductive rights in this country. Neither one of them could come up with an explanation, but this interview is an upsetting demonstration of the other things that are being damaged and endangered as a result of that determination.
