Happy birthday Samhita!

It’s been quite a year for Samhita Mukhopadhyay, Feministing’s fierce executive editor and someone I’m proud to call a personal friend and mentor.

With her breakout book Outdated: Why Dating is Ruining Your Love Life (Seal Press) she achieved new heights, questioning the retrograde sexism, racism, and homophobia of  traditional relationship advice so often aimed at young people and receiving accolades from just about everyone, including Melissa Harris-Perry.

Her Occupy Valentine’s Day was a huge hit, generating buzz and thoughtful discussion about the romantic industrial complex and our popular notions of love.

Plus she keeps droppin knowledge on the blog, whether she’s dissecting the “Shit People Say” memeswith her own definitive take, unpacking the racial dimensions to the Kony2012 fallout,  or naming trans-border complexities so powerfully that it makes some of us step back and say damn.

It’s so exciting to see her continue to reach new heights both professionally and personally, because she does so much for the site behind the scenes as well, acts as such an inspiration to all of us on a daily basis. On a personal note, Samhita is one of the few people I feel I can call to talk about anything and a true friend.

So please join all of us here at Feministing in wishing Samhita the most spirited and  joyful of birthdays- just what she deserves!! xo

She is also the Director of Youth Engagement at Women Deliver, where she promotes meaningful youth engagement in international development efforts, including through running the award-winning Women Deliver Young Leaders Program. Lori was formerly the Director of Global Communications at Planned Parenthood Federation of America, and has also worked at the United Nations Foundation on the Secretary-General's flagship Every Woman Every Child initiative, and at the International Women’s Health Coalition and Human Rights Watch. As a leading voice on women’s rights issues, Lori frequently consults, speaks and publishes on feminism, activism and movement-building. A graduate of Harvard University, Lori has been named to The Root 100 list of the most influential African Americans in the United States, and to Forbes Magazine‘s list of the “30 Under 30” successful mediamakers. She lives in Brooklyn, NY.
