Maria Klawe and women in computer science

There was an interesting article in the New York Times about women in computer science and Maria Klawe, the current president of Harvey Mudd College (which, if you don’t know, is a high-quality science & engineering school that’s part of the Claremont college consortium).

It sounds like Harvey Mudd is experiencing success in increasing women’s representation in computer science, which is mentioned as “the unique area of science and technology where women have made negative progress.”

The article describes it as “unclear” whether their methods could be extended more generally. I like to think that they could. Hopefully this trend will spread and reverse the previous ongoing slump away from equal representation.
