It’s International Women’s Day–a nice reminder that every other day must be International Men’s Day! Oh, wait…that’s not the point.
At Feministing, everyday is International Women’s Day. But on this day, let’s think about how much women around the world are kicking ass–whether it be on the steps of Virginia’s capital, in the Philippines or online. If today is about raising awareness about the ruthless war on women’s rights, world-wide, and the many battles ahead–I’m all for it.
Please put links to actions, write-ups, blog posts and anything else you want to share for IWD, today and beyond.

I found this AMAZING video that is a parody of Lady Gaga’s Bad Romance, rewritten as the story of women’s suffrage in the U.S.A. I love love love it, with the caveat of all the actors being entirely white. (Seriously?! Diversity fail. Everything else is so well done, really.)
Great video!
Some may not be aware that a calendar has been published commemorating the struggles of Egyptian blogger Aliaa Elmahdy, who defied authorities and posted a nude photo of herself on her blog, daring the government to prosecute her for it. Now the #NakedPhotoRevolutionaries calendar is available from a link at the following (non-sex) URL: http://tinyurl.com/7tcnrfy
I watched from “Women War and Peace” about women’s involvement in government in Afghanistan. It was heartbreaking but so inspiring seeing these brave women stand up for women with the threat of death at their doorsteps. Amazing.
Also, I had a great discussion in my gender studies class about the rampant sexual assaults of women in the Congo. We watched Anderson Cooper’s It was also incredibly heartbreaking – the atmosphere in the classroom completely shifted. We had many different responses – anger, sadness, shock – but the main outcome of our discussion was that we all need to 1. be aware of what is going on in the world, 2. put more value on people who have different cultures than our own and 3. talk about rape differently and focus on changing the attitudes about rape rather than change the victims. Very powerful.
Oops – sorry about the excessive linkage – still having trouble with html

Isnt the debate all about wether tax money should be spent on contraceptions and abortions? As long as tax money is involved with either, it will persist as a hot topic among politicians and what if a hard stance against abortion is the ticket to whatever position you run for?
The debate is about the government requiring insurance companies to cover contraception. The simplified version: one side says birth control is a preventative medicine, ergo it should be covered (as seen with the flu shot) vs. a religious organization such as a church should not required to pay for insurance that will pay for something they are against (i.e. birth control).
There you have it, if abortion becomes goverment buisness, it will persist as a political playball. Better to educate women to save up money for an abortion just in case and to get that too later.
Everyone should check out http://www.UniteWomen.org/ there is going to be a HUGE womens rights march at least 1 in every state. CA has 2! Please check it out and get involved!!
My friend put me on to this wonderful video about Grace Hopper: “A navy admiral and math whiz, she taught computers to talk.”
Jeez, can we stop trying to “reclaim” the word “pussy?” It’s an offensive, disgusting, degrading term and it will never be anything else. I’m sick of seeing it on posters and books by self-identified feminists.
