Arizona GOP debate audience boos birth control

The Republican debate booers are back! Earlier in this primary cycle, Republican debate audiences booed a gay soldier, former presidential hopeful Governor Rick Perry bragging about a high number of executions under his leadership in Texas, and cheered the idea of letting an uninsured man who couldn’t afford necessary medical treatment die. Last night, the audience that has shaped the primary season more than any of the candidates returned to boo the very idea of birth control.

CNN Debate moderator John King posed this question sent by one of the viewers to the candidates, “Since birth control is the latest hot topic, which candidate believes in birth control and if not why?”

For women, heart attacks look different – and so do heart health outcomes

Heart disease is the number one killer of women in America. Approximately 26% of women who die in this country every year die of heart disease – that’s about 316, 000 women a year. And, a new study reveals that women who have heart attacks are more likely (15%) to die in the hospital than men who have heart attacks (10%).

There are a number of reasons for this. As USA Today reported yesterday, “women are less likely to get immediate treatment to stop the heart attack in its tracks: clot-busting drugs, balloon procedures to open the arteries or bypass surgery.” This delay accounts, in part, for the five percent disparity in in-hospital death rates.

BREAKING: Key VA Senate committee passes Personhood bill

Virginia’s Personhood bill now moves to the full Virginia Senate. ABC7 in Richmond reports:

A bill that would define life as starting at conception has been approved in a key Senate committee.

Eight Republicans voted for the measure, and the committee’s seven Democrats opposed it after an hour-long hearing on the bill that is similar to one in Missouri.

The bill passed after an amendment clarifying that no provision in it would restrict the use of federally approved contraception.

At least three times, the committee chairman, Sen. Steve Martin, threatened to have police remove opponents of the bill after they spoke out during debate.

Prime Ministering while female

So, Australia’s Foreign Minister resigned yesterday. He resigned at 1am yesterday at a hastily-convened press conference in Washington, DC, in the middle of a trip.

A little background, for those of you who aren’t Australian. Australia’s until-recently Foreign Minister is a man by the name of Kevin Rudd. In 2007, the Australian Labor Party swept into office, largely thanks to the energy created by the prospect of having Rudd as head of the party and therefore as Prime Minister. Rudd’s Deputy PM, Julia Gillard, was the first woman to serve as Deputy PM. And then, in 2010, after months of rumours of intraparty conflict and leadership struggles, the ALP booted Rudd and replaced him with Gillard.

Shorter VA Governor: Women Should be Violated over Belly, not through Vagina

The overt is often more dangerous than the covert.

As many predicted, implementing the rape of women with ultrasounds and probes is not politically savvy. Virginia Governor Bob McDonnell, who had initially promised to sign the bill requiring women to undergo a transvaginal ultrasound before terminating a pregnancy has had a change of heart. Today, in a statement, The Governor asks the General Assembly to amend the bill, so that only a transabdominal, or external, ultrasound would be required.

For this reason, I have recommended to the General Assembly a series of amendments to this bill. I am requesting that the General Assembly amend this bill to explicitly state that no woman in Virginia will have to undergo a transvaginal ...

Media FAIL in Coverage of Study on Gender Conformity and Abuse

“Gender Uncertainty Risky for Kids.”
“Child Gender Nonconformity Linked to Higher Risk of Abuse.”
“Kids Who Veer From Gender Norms at Higher Risk for Abuse.”
“Gender identity issues can harm kids’ mental health.”

These are just a few of the headlines that have been used in pieces referencing a new study on gender conformity in children and risk factors for abuse. Similar headlines have been published in virtually every mainstream media (MSM) outlet including CNN, ABC News, and the AP.

Framing the issue in this way smacks of victim blaming and transphobia, for three reasons:
