So, Texas banned all abortion affiliates from receiving funding

It’s the 21st century and somehow I’ve found myself living in the Christian States of America. And yes, you read the subject line correctly.

At the direction of lawmakers and Texas Attorney General Greg Abbott, the Texas Health and Human Services commissioner signed a rule on Thursday that formally bans Planned Parenthood clinics and other “affiliates of abortion providers” from participating in the program — something the Obama administration has said is a deal-breaker for the nearly $40 million-per-year state-federal Medicaid program.

Aren’t these the same people who revile any other country that has any form of religion in its laws? Like, I don’t know, Iran maybe?

I mean it’s not like they really care about ending abortion because if they did, they would make sure that they provide adequate sex education and access to birth control instead of just trying to ban abortions, preaching abstinence-only education (because that really works), and limiting women’s access to birth control.

Most of us may not remember or have even been alive back when abortion was illegal (I know I wasn’t) but it was once illegal and that sure as hell didn’t stop women from endangering their lives and obtaining life-threatening unsafe abortions.

You’d think that these pro-lifers who care so much about the sanctity of life would take a page from history’s book and realize that abortion won’t stop if you make it illegal or inaccessible and it surely won’t drop if you further limit access to birth control.

Texas already consists of some of the poorest counties in the United States and the government has just enacted legislation that will rob those poor women of even more rights. The state also has the 4th highest rate of teen pregnancy.

The hypocrisy of the “pro-lifers” is infuriating. They approach abortion and birth control as this horrible morally corrupt act and cannot see beyond the scope of their religious blinders. While that may work for their conscience, it surely doesn’t logistically apply, I mean…how’s the whole making marijuana illegal thing going? Not so well is it?

If they want to lower the rate of abortion, they need to propose a logical and possibly effective way of tackling it instead of just shoving their religion down everyone’s throat. And that’s precisely what Texas Commissioner Tom Suehs has done here. He has taken his religion and shoved it down the throats of at least 130,000 low-income women who will surely and painfully gag on it.
