Anniversary of Roe vs. Wade

January 22nd will mark the 39th anniversary of Roe vs. Wade, the ruling that secured a woman’s right to a safe, legal abortion. Before Roe v Wade, abortions performed were back alley, illegal, and many women died from botched abortions. To me, that is a terrible reality to even ponder. I was born after this ruling, so I know my rights. But many of those rights are being attacked right now, from heartbeat bills in Ohio to personhood measures in other states. Our fight for our right to choose isn’t over.

When the religious right started gaining steam in the 1980’s, things started to go downhill for this country. Deregulation of Wall Street to tax breaks for the rich led to the income inequality that we’re seeing today. But it’s this same movement that is trying to attack our constitutional right to choose.

On January 22nd, NARAL Pro-Choice America is hosting the blog for choice day. You can sign up on their blog here, or even blog here on feministing. But either way way we need to shout our message: Trust women, protect choice!
