Melissa Harris-Perry on Michele Bachmann and Michelle Obama’s faith in America

You may have noticed we’re big Melissa Harris-Perry fans here at Feministing. The professor was on The Last Word yesterday to take on the media’s differential treatment of Michelle Obama and Michele Bachmann when they both made comments that the 2008 or 2012 campaign, respectively, gave them faith in the US. Specifically, Michelle Obama’s statement caused a big ol’ media storm, and Michele Bachmann’s caused… well, just Melissa Harris-Perry’s commentary. Which is a lot smarter, better reasoned, and much more educational than my initial reaction of, “Dude, shit’s racist.”

This is a terrific segment. Too bad I spent the first few minutes trying to get the sour taste out of my mouth from the preceding advertisement, with an Exxon mobile rep raving about the safety and environmental friendliness of gas drilling.

Man she articulated that so well. I love the analogy she gave at the end.

Thank you, Melissa, for adding additional perspective. There are things which are true but would not have occurred to me to consider. I am indebted. Keep talking!

Melissa Harris-Perry is a natural. I’d love to see her teach in NY (so I could attend) and be full time on TV.

I think Ms. Harris-Perry’s analysis is great, but I think that – here at least- there may be a simpler explanation. When Michelle Obama said she’d not been proud of her country, she was assumed to be speaking of the current Republican/conservative regime – and that made Fox et. al. quick to attack her for it. When Michelle Bachmann said she’d lost faith, it was assumed she was referring to the current Democratic regime, which is just fine with the current dominant media conversation.
