Scandal! Michelle Obama indulges in a burger, fries, and shake. Let the illogical fat shaming food policing commence.

um, the issue with Michelle Obama is about fat shaming. It’s about pointing out perceived hypocrisy with her stance on fighting obesity and eating a high calorie, unhealthy meal. while i know one can eat poorly on occasion (say on cheat days) and still hold fast to the idea of eating well generally, pointing out her meal is fair political game and has nothing to do with fat shaming
“…pointing out her meal is fair political game”
Uh, while I have to say I think the policies and views Michelle Obama promotes regarding food and weight are invasive and oppressive, and so criticism of her own food choices has a ring of poetic justice to it, it most certainly does not constitute any feminist idea of “fair political game.” Unless you happen to consider the way this country obsesses over and polices what women do with and put into their bodies a good thing.
When Michelle Obama shames people for eating “poorly” (I’m not even going to touch that), it’s gross. When people shame Michelle Obama for eating “poorly”…it’s also gross.

michelle’s policies are hardly directed at women or females generally, so i don’t see the feminist angle on this. what does the statement “Unless you happen to consider the way this country obsesses over and polices what women do with and put into their bodies a good thing” have to do with her work on getting all kids to eat well? and why is it oppressive for one to point out that having eats eat to the point they get diabetes at 16 isn’t a good thing?
Well-said.
There is no “issue” beyond some people trying to score political points with a terrible argument that would not convince a smart kindergartner.
Eating a less nutritious meal on a given day has virtually no effect and doesn’t show any kind of hypocrisy if the same person has an overall healthy eating scheme going on. Just knowing they ate a burger and fries doesn’t even tell you whether they gained or lost bodyfat that day.
Now if she was on record saying every single meal has to be nutritious or you are a bad person/parent, I’d think a little bit differently.
i meant to say the issue with Michelle Obama is NOT about fat shaming
Once in a while you can have trans-fatty foods, my Mom was a nurse and told me this. Also: I love you Feministing Editors for linking to the article I wrote! To quote the great Sally Field: “You like me! You really like me!”
I thought this was a really interesting story as well: http://www.npr.org/2011/07/13/137681070/for-stanton-all-women-were-not-created-equal
