Kansas Update: One Planned Parenthood clinic to stay open

It looks like the Kansas Health Department has changed its tune.

Late Thursday, the Kansas Department of Health and Environment announced it will be giving a license to one Planned Parenthood clinic that provides abortions, reports AP. Kate Sheppard confirmed it with PP reps:

Planned Parenthood just announced that the health department has, in fact, decided to grant it a license to continue operating. The PP clinic in Overland Park will remain open. “Notwithstanding that the regulations are burdensome and unnecessary, the findings of the inspection indicate what we have known and said throughout this process: Planned Parenthood operates with the highest standards of patient care and has rigorous safety procedures in place,” said Brownlie.

This is really good news to hear, but I still can’t breath a sigh of relief. The fact that Kansas nearly became the first state to cease to provide abortions is a really fucking scary thing, and should be a reminder to the entire country of exactly how serious the war on reproductive freedom is. Y’all know I’m not one to be a Debbie Downer, but this is no victory, folks — it’s simply a save.
