What We Missed

Friday was the one year anniversary of the passage of SB 1070, the much-opposed anti-immigrant Arizona legislation. Seth Freed Wessler at Colorlines talks about the anniversary and how the biggest problem facing immigrant communities today isn’t actually these state bills–it’s the federal government’s policies.

Texas law makers are trying to roll back a law in the state that allows transgender people to marry.

Our very own Chloe Angyal is speaking in NYC on Wednesday in a blogger/author dialogue with Cara Hoffman, author of So Much Pretty. Details here.

A new tactic in the growing field of anti-choice legislation that patronizes women and interferes with medical practice: requiring doctors to offer women a print out of the ultrasound photo pre-procedure.

A Michigan lawmaker thinks foster kids don’t deserve new clothes because he “‘never had anything new,’ Caswell says. ‘I got all the hand-me-downs.'” He wants to mandate that their clothing come from thrift stores by issuing gift certificates to Salvation Army and Goodwill instead of money for clothes to be used anywhere.

Re: Michigan. I’ve noticed some folks in my own small circle of liberal/leftie people getting pissy about angel tree and other holiday charities about what the kids there are asking for – “I wouldn’t buy that for my own kids, why should I get it for some charity case?”. And while it’s kinda annoying I can’t buy second hand stuff for my angel tree kids cuz I would be able to buy them more clothes than just an outfit or two, I realise this may be the only brand spanking new, what they really wanted thing they get all year. They probably already get their everyday clothes and toys from thrift stores and garage sales and chances are they don’t have aunts and uncles and grandparents that are more than happy to spoil them rotten. It’s Xmas for gripes sakes! Don’t be such assholes. Or donate money or find a senior that just wants a new robe instead of a child that doesn’t necessarily understand why Santa can’t get them the same thing their friends are getting.

This move is like some scarlet “P” that says kids aren’t worth the extra dollar or two (cause I know in my area some of the goodwills are only slightly cheaper than walmart or target) to give them something that doesn’t scream “look at me I’m poor!”

I agree…I like that the items at Goodwill fund all the other wonderful programs they do as a nonprofit, but truth is that it’s second hand stuff marked way up (compared to garage sales for example). I have long disagreed with my friends who think that Goodwill is some enormous cost saving method. I feel this true especially if we’re talking about buying a few items for foster kids.

I’m curious how much of tax payer’s money has been/will be spent on this annoying piece of legislation, when it could have just been left alone. If this guy was my lawmaker, I’d be pissed.

1st Story: True. For true. I hope no one is celebrating this law.
2nd Story: WTF Texas?????????????????????????? I didn’t even know that Texas had a law allowing Transgender people to marry.
3rd Story: Is there going to be audio? Congrats Chole!!!!!!!!!!!!
4th Story: Aren’t anti-choicers just happy using a copy of ultrasound pictures to make pregnant women and young girls turned off abortion? Do they have to make doctors do that?
5th Story: Caswell, I’m sorry you didn’t get much new stuff growing up, but why do you think that sniping at young children that weren’t even alive when you were growing up will help anything?

    Re: Texas

Some trans people have ALWAYS been able to get married under these kinds of laws — if their assigned sex/birth sex is the opposite of the assigned/birth sex of their partner. Not ALL trans people have been able to get married; it depends on their partner’s sex, what documents are required for a marriage license, and what documents they have/haven’t changed during transition. Let’s not go homogenizing an entire group of people in the name of calling out discrimination. Close but no cigar, NY Times.

I DO like this story for highlighting the fact that LGB =/= T. So ten points for that, Feministing.

I am not a foster kid, and I don’t want to sound like I’m trivializing anything (because clearly I cannot know what it is like to be in foster care), but I am in a really terrible financial situation right now and when my grandma sent me a new pair of (pink!) socks last week I felt like the queen of england, and I’m a adult.

Why take away any small pleasure from these kids? Especially since it won’t actually make any difference in the budget and seems to only serve to keep the poor in their place.

I think I could have just called him a “big meanie” and been done with it.
