Iowa Republican Steve King teaches kiddies about abortion

PhotobucketYou know, when I think about who I want educating young Americans about the fraught and complex issue of abortion, there’s only one man who comes to mind. No, not Ross Douthat. It’s Iowa Republican Congressman Steve King! Ok, not really. He’s actually number 943, 384 on my list of people who I think are qualified to be teaching elementary school-aged children about a woman’s right to bodily autonomy. But it seems that Congressman Steve King believes he is qualified to do just that: In an interview published just before Christmas, King told a right-wing news site:

I often go into a high school auditorium or meet with people at even the K-through-12 level in their entirety, and I will tell them: “You will be asked to answer one of the most profound moral questions of our age and that is where do you stand on the abortion issue. And you need to only ask and answer two questions. The first question is do you believe that human life is sacred in all of its forms. Is the person sitting to your left and to your right and everyone in this room, is their life sacred?” And they’ll nod their heads.

Republicans, in general, oppose sex education for American high school students, but this Republican clearly believes that it’s appropriate to teach elementary school kids about abortion. Provided they learn about it the pro-life way, of course. And in a way that involves Jesus, in a public school. Looks like Mr. King might need to pay extra attention to this week’s reading of the Constitution on the House floor.
