Amplify Your Voice launches video series on abstinence-only programs

This is just so bad-ass, I can hardly contain my glee. The folks at Amplify Your Voice have taken it upon themselves to put together their own web video series using Xtranormal to expose the ridiculousness of abstinence-only programs. Here is their first of hopefully many with a FTW title: “Drink the Spit.”

Future house majority leader John Boehner meets with anti-abortion extremists

Digby has the scoop that future House Majority Leader Rep John Boehner (R-OH) recently made time to meet with Randall Terry. Randall Terry is the man behind the violently anti-choice Operation Rescue, known by many as a domestic terrorist, and has repeatedly and publicly called for violence against abortion providers and clinic staff.

I’ve been on a few lobby visits to the Hill myself, and never have I had the pleasure of an actual audience with a Representative. The fact that Rep. Boehner, future Republican leader of the House, would make the time to sit down with such extremists is appalling. I can only imagine what’s to come from his leadership next year.

Nancy Keenan sums it up:

In remembrance of poet and activist Laura Hershey

Laura Hershey, a poet and disability rights activist passed away this weekend.

I had the great fortune of getting to know Laura this summer when we both participated in a writer’s retreat hosted by the Lambda Literary Foundation. I wish our paths had crossed sooner. She was a talented poet, passionate activist, mother and partner.

Laura was featured on Feministing in 2007, in an interiew by Celina.

Here is an excerpt from that interview:

What do you think are some common stereotypes of people living with disabilities?

I think the main thing is that people think of [one's disability] as a private little problem, a tragedy. They don’t think it has anything to do with the world.

“Miss TSA” calendar reminds us just how unsexy some “sexy” poses are

Especially the one in the second row, where the woman looks like she’s about to start doing tricep dips. It’s a nice reminder that in addition to all the makeup, lighting, airbrushing and photoshopping, making what’s considered to be a “sexy” photo also requires some really uncomfortable posing.

The photos were originally taken for another calendar that was designed to convince doctors to buy x-ray monitors. Both calendars are clearly meant as parodies, albeit crappy, sexist ones. But I appreciate these photos because they’re a reminder that, when you look at conventional definitions of “sexy” from a slightly different angle – in this case, from an angle that removes facial expression, hair, makeup, surrounding requisite beach or fur rug ...
