Lauryn Hill makes a splash at Rock the Bells
Ms. Lauryn Hill, the first woman recording artist to earn 10 Grammy nominations in one night and subsequently win 5 Grammys, is making appearances and climbing up the charts once again. The above clip (sound is a little dodgy, my bad) is from the “Rock the Bells” tour. Lauryn has received glowing reviews since she hit the stage this weekend and debuted on the Top 100 Billboard with a new song “Repercussions.” It has been a long-time coming for this tour and we may look back at this moment and see a real turning point in the artistry of one of the most conscious woman hip hop artists of our generation.
This great news about Lauryn is right on time. The Internets will be abuzz with hip hop news about women leading up to BET’s presentation of “My Mic Sounds Nice: A Truth About Women In Hip Hop.” Airing one week from now, BET has defined the project as an examination of “gender-specific differences in artistry, marketing, promotion and economics. It reveals much about the industry and the truths about hip-hop and women that many in the community don’t want to address.”
In truth, Lauryn Hill’s name goes unmentioned in the same web article that touts the documentary as “comprehensive.” However, I am eager to get to the bottom of why women have been unrepresented and underrepresented in the musical genre that has been the soundtrack of my life. My Mic Sounds Nice will premiere on August 30 at 10:00 PM EST on BET.
