Facebook’s latest attempt at gender equality is still male-centric

So after nearly half a decade, FB woke up to the fact that women use it, too. Now if you check your gender in your profile as “female” and do not have a profile picture, the default picture assigned to you by facebook will have a “girl” silhouette with shoulder-length hair. If your gender is checked as “male,” you will still have a “boy” silhouette with short hair and a sort of a mohawk. (For those who did not know/realize, previously both ‘male’ and ‘female’ subscribers had the ‘male-looking’ silhouette, which lead to many people complaining about Facebook’s seeming disregard of the presence of women on their website).

HOWEVER. If you decline to check your gender in your profile, your default profile picture will be one assigned to ‘male’ users. So the ‘male’ avatar is basically their standard default. Yea… This without even getting into the issues of gender norms, queer, trans issues, and I’m sure many others I did not think of off the top of my head. Why couldnt they just go with the “?” they used for a little while, as in: “we dont know what a picture of this person looks like!” or a non-gender specific image.

Finally, where do I complain to FB? Is there a number, an email address, a link? I would also encourage everyone else to complain…if anyone knows how.
