True Beauty and Pregnant Women

I guess everyone says this…. but let me start by saying I am really not a reality TV show watcher.  I have however been recently fascinated by True Beauty, first because I love Carson Kressley and second because I really hate how mean people are on reality TV and I like seeing people get laid into for it.  I realize that doesn’t make me less of a voyeur just a different sort.

Anywhooo, in case you aren’t familiar with this particular show, it is a beauty contest of sorts.  A group of men and women are brought to Vegas and told that they are competing to be the “Face of Vegas” for which they will receive some small amount of fame, blah blah blah.  However, in reality they are being filmed at time supposedly without their knowledge so see how they will act in (unbeknownst to them) staged situation meant to test their inner beauty.  So to win you need to be a good person, and also hot.  Each week they have a challenge that has nothing to do with inner beauty and then 2 people are up for elimination and the meanest one gets humiliated by tape of them being a jerk and sent home while everyone else continues on, unaware of the true nature of the game.  No doubt it is trash.

This week one of the secret inner beauty challenges had to do with whether the contestant would confront a pregnant woman (not really pregnant) in an elevator when she is drinking and smoking.  (Can you smoke in elevators in Vegas?)  This kind of didn’t sit well with me.

Let me just say that if I was in an elevator and any one walked in
with a lit cigarette I would ask them to put it out and glare at them if
they didn’t but I honestly don’t have a problem with pregnant women
smoking or drinking.  If someone asked me “should I smoke or drink while
I am pregnant?”  I would respond “Well I didn’t go to medical school
but I would guess it is a bad idea”.  I don’t plan on during it if I get
pregnant but it isn’t illegal and I feel like most people know the
dangers and if they don’t it isn’t my place to “educate” them.  Here is
the thing, True Beauty is not a subtle show dealing with complex moral
and ethical issues; it pretty much sees things in black and white.  Does
society as a whole feel like it is not only appropriate but necessary
to confront pregnant women who are not behaving in the communally agreed
upon best interests of the fetus?

I was wondering if other people had thoughts about this.  Is it okay
to confront a pregnant woman who is drinking, smoking or even using some
other substance that may harm her fetus?  If you were a bartender would
you serve a pregnant woman?  If you were a clerk would you sell her
cigarettes?
