A normal day

Just another normal day. I get to work at 8am. It’s standard retail work, shelving product at a chain store. Work for 2 hours, take my first 15 minute break in the breakroom to get some coffee. Sit down in the breakroom at a table with 2 coworkers, both female. Somewhere middle of our conversation I get told to be careful around one of my male coworkers, because he has a tendency to proposition female employees. Somehow this doesn’t surprise me. Go back to work. Lunch. Back to work. Put some product out on the shelves. Hear a whistle behind me. A man tells me “don’t worry I whistle at all the girls.” He continues to engage me in conversation, taking advantage of my position as a store employee. My inability to tell him to get lost. Finally escape to the stockroom, where my coworkers tell me that he’s always like that. Been coming into the store and harassing female employees for 2 years. Also get confirmation that the one coworker I was warned about is indeed known for harassment. Next break. More work. Drive home.
In a single workday, I encountered two men who are well-known for harassment. I was struck by the sheer normality of it. Sexual harassment is the norm. My female friends sympathize but advise me to get a thicker skin. And they may be right. Because I need a job, and putting up with harassment is still all too often the price for having a job.
