LA Back Tracks on Getting Rape Kits Tested

Remember that Human Rights Watch report on the horrifying back log of unprocessed rape kits in LA County? Remember how it motivated the LA police department to take responsibility and increase personnel to get justice served, at long last? We posted on it a lot. Well, all that’s kaput:

BREAKING: Scott Roeder Found Guilty Of Murdering Dr. George Tiller

A Kansas jury just found Scott Roeder guilty of first degree murder in the killing of abortion doctor George Tiller at his church last May.
The jury reportedly deliberated for less than hour. Roeder, an extremist anti-abortion activist, admitted on the stand that he killed Tiller.
Roeder was also found guilty on two counts of aggravated assault for pointing his gun at church ushers.

He will getting life in prison, with a chance of parole after 25 years (Kansas Star via TPM).

Quick Hit: A Medical School in Canada is Doing Pelvic Exams Without Consent?

I haven’t been able to find any other material on this, but several readers have sent this in from the Globe and Mail. And it is disturbing.

Medical students routinely practice doing internal pelvic examinations while surgery patients are unconscious, and without getting specific consent, at least in Canada.
Guidelines in the United States and Britain say specific consent is required but, by contrast, Canadian guidelines state that pelvic examination by trainees is “implicit.”
The practice – one of those dirty little secrets of medicine – has been exposed in a thoughtful, professional manner by a young doctor.

The POTUS Needs More Questions from Women!

On Monday the President of the United States is sitting down with Steve Grove from CitizenTube and will be answering a series of questions generated directly from their Youtube channel. They have about eight video questions up right now, but none of them are from women.
Submission guidelines are simple: Just click the submit a question button on the top right. If you are doing a video, keep it to 20 seconds or less and you can text questions as well, but they would prefer video. On the right hand side of the CitizenTube homepage there is a list of topics to ask from.

Adoptees of color speak out against international adoption of Haitian children

Following the earthquake in Haiti some people have been pushing for adoption of Haitian children by folks in the global north. This includes Penny Young Nance, CEO of the anti-choice, anti-feminist organization Concerned Women for America.
A group called the Adoptees of Color Roundtable has issued a Statement on Haiti written from the perspective of a group of adoptees of color who oppose international adoption of Haitian children. Here’s an excerpt:

For more than fifty years “orphaned children” have been shipped from areas of war, natural disasters, and poverty to supposedly better lives in Europe and North America. Our adoptions from Vietnam, South Korea, Guatemala and many other countries are no different from what is happening to the children ...
