Video: Transgender Basics

When you have 20 minutes free check out this new video from the Gender Identity Project, “Transgender Basics.” It’s Trans 101 in video form, an excellent resource to have and something I know I’ll be using a lot. I never agree with everything in a Trans 101 curriculum – the ways we teach this information are constantly growing and evolving as we try to find the best and most inclusive ways to explain trans and gender non-conforming theory and experience. But I’m impressed by this straightforward, comprehensible, and compassionate video.

I checked with the Gender Identity Project and unfortunately there is currently no transcript available. If anyone out there would like to volunteer their time to help transcribe the ...

Coping with herpes

We need to talk about herpes. Below is a piece I wrote for my campus newspaper offering one woman’s testimony. But I know there are many woman out there who have felt stigma in their communities from sexually transmitted infections (STIs). It is a shame because STIs are so much more common than we may think.
This woman’s story also touches on how some women may feel like their rights to sexual pleasure, particularly through oral sex, are revoked upon diagnosis. Can we truly achieve gender equality when we are denied sexual reciprocity in our personal lives? I think not. That’s not to say that their is a reciprocity mandate for every sexual act. But it seems to me that ...

Notes from a bitch…out of sight…

I recently watched a television show that presented a year-end review of newspapers and publications that died in 2009. The segment ran through a list of well-known magazines and big daily newspapers that ceased publication and pondered the impact of that on the communities those publications served. As I watched, I noted that the reporter failed to mention the fact that lots of local community newspapers died in 2009 too. Local and regional community newspapers may not be on media critic’s radar, but they should be…and their loss may have a larger impact than people think.
Full disclosure – I used to work in marketing for the LGBT community newspaper here in St. Louis Missouri. I ...

Senate “compromise” on health care reform jeopardizes women’s health

This weekend, the Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid scrambled to find a compromise on a health care bill that would satisfy all sixty Democrats, guaranteeing enough votes to pass the legislation without fear of a Republican filibuster.
Last week we heard about Senator Joe Lieberman’s stand-still which killed the public option and the Medicare buy-in for people over 55, which had been the public option compromise.
This weekend, despite the fact that Senator’s had defeated Senator Ben Nelson’s anti-abortion amendment previously (which looked a lot like the amendment from Representative Stupak that made it into the house bill), Reid negotiated this compromise, via the New York Times:

Under the agreement, states could choose to prohibit abortion coverage in the ...

Ask Professor Foxy: How Can I Be Sure Someone Less Experienced Is OK To Date?

This weekly week-end column “Ask Professor Foxy” will regularly contain sexually explicit material. This material is likely not safe for work viewing. The title of the column will include the major topic of the post, so please read the topic when deciding whether or not to read the entire column.
Dear Professor Foxy,
I’m in a very sticky situation at the moment. I’m currently 17, and the girl I’m interested in (and has expressed interest in me) is a couple weeks shy of 15. She’s definitely a much more mature and self-actualized person than her age would suggest, but the fact remains that there’s a huge difference in our life experience. I’m a senior, she’s a freshman; I’m a poly, ...

I know what I’m looking forward to doing this holiday season? Putting on my finest party dress, lying down on the floor, and lovingly stroking all the cleaning devices I’ve been given!
Shark-Fu on why the Senate health care bill is NOT acceptable. And Amanda on the likelihood of a “compromise” between the Stupak amendment and the public option. And Matt points out that blocking the health-care bill over abortion is the not “pro-life.”
A general added pregnancy to the list of offenses punishable by court-martial. [updated]
Avatar is the latest in the cinematic tradition of films about white guilt. Also, says James Cameron of the extra-terrestrial heroine of the film, “Right from ...
