Family Guy “Abortion” Episode Will Most Likely Not be Run on Fox

Seth MacFarlane, writer of the Family Guy a show filled with dirty jokes and political anti-correctness announced on a panel at Comic Con that he is producing an episode about abortion in the upcoming season of Family Guy, but it looks like 20th Century Fox will not air the show.

MacFarlane revealed he’s producing a controversial episode about abortion for the upcoming season. But he and others on the panel said that Fox was unlikely to air the episode.
“20th Century Fox, as always, allowed us to produce the episode and then said, ‘You know what? We’re scared to f–king death of this,'” MacFarlane said.
The episode will probably be available on DVD, he added.
A Fox spokesperson said ...

UK gender pay gap widens, according to new report

The Women and Work Commission have released a new report (PDF) with research and stats on the current gender pay gap as well as a call to action to work on the ground and address various problems that contribute to the gap.
According to their findings, while the pay gap has narrowed in the last 10 years, it has widened again since 2007. I like their suggestion for smaller, local approaches as well as policy changes:

The commission pointed to a failure of “small scale and sporadic” efforts to break down gender stereotypes in schools and urged the government to focus its efforts there.
“Often without even thinking about it, young girls can choose to role-play at ...

When radio goes so, so wrong.

Trigger warning.
Prepare to seethe. On a popular Australian 2DayFM radio show segment where hosts “Kyle and Jackie O.” have guests on to undergo a lie detector test, little did they know that the 14-year old girl who was brought by her mother and subjected to the test was a rape victim.
The girl had told Kyle Sandilands she was scared before the questions began, but they continued, in which they knew the mother intended to ask them about her daughter’s sex life and drug use:

The mother then asked her daughter: “Have you ever had sex?”
The 14-year-old replied: “I’ve already told you the story about this … and don’t look at me and smile because it’s not funny.”

GLAAD releases index of LGBT representation on television

GLAAD has released their third annual Network Responsibility Index, a review of LGBT representation on television. I found this report particularly interesting as I’m a pop culture addict who constantly finds myself consuming deeply problematic media that seldom represents my community.
Some key findings:
• HBO led all networks with 58.5 (42%) of the network’s 140 total programming hours featuring LGBT representation. This is an increase of 16% over the previous season. Of HBO’s 14 original series, 10 included LGBT content and of the four that did not, three were sports news programming.
• For the third year in a row, ABC led the broadcast networks in LGBT-inclusive content. Of its 1,146.5 total hours of primetime programming, 269.5 ...

Can we achieve a real “common ground” on abortion?

Remember U.S. Rep Tim Ryan’s ousting from Democrat’s for Life of America’s advisory board for supporting contraception? Well, it looks like he’s taken an initiative from the experience to reintroduce a bill that’s garnering support from folks on both sides.
Ryan co-authored the bill with Rosa DeLauro (D-Conn) titled Unintended Pregnancies, Reducing the Need for Abortion and Supporting Parents Act, which focuses on creating programs that improve access to family planning in low-income communities, reinstating Title X funding as well as fund comprehensive sex education. It’s being backed by pro-choice organizations like NARAL as well as supported by a range of religious organizations and leaders.
Religion Dispatches has an excellent overview of the previous bill (that ...

NYTimes article on the new demand for women wanting jobs as “hostesses” in Japan due to the failing economy. (Unrelated: Say “hostesses” 3 times in a row.)
A must-read piece by Jaclyn Friedman on the Roethlisberger case. I wrote about it here.
Pam Merritt on the Surgeon General’s weight at RH Reality check.
Not so shocking headline of the day, “Teen pregnancy and disease rates rose sharply during Bush years, agency finds.”
Finally read this piece by Amanda on how the mainstream media is reinforcing false information on the public funding on abortion. Best quote from her piece,

Here’s the unvarnished truth: There is no way that any kind of public ...
