Anti-rape Hints From Extremists Ring a Bell

“Forsake lipstick to avoid rape,” is the headline of this cute little piece from the Guardian. Lipstick and noisy high heels are dangerous come-ons according to some Malaysian officials of the Pan-Malaysian Islamic Party.

Mostly I’m just posting this because it’s all so familar, and maybe the association of a such silly ideas with dangerous conservatives will drive home how baseless such statements are.

Sure, maybe we’re all already feminists here on feministing but hey. The point is, blaming the victim for wearing “sexy” (attractive) clothing and makeup is dumb beyond belief. Normal women don’t wear even the most outrageous of clothes with the intent of being violated against their will. And most rapes (at least here) are from men we know, not some dude that spots us in a saucy outfit as we run an errand.

P.S. This post and my last one (that made it to the front page, wow) are both headlines that I found via Fark… yes, that bastion of chauvanism. I don’t know if it’s worth giving credit to a news aggregator, but there you go…
