My scary YouTube comments

I think my video hit a nerve. Check out some of the comments I’ve erased from the vid after the jump. These are the times I doubt the basic goodness of people. Or at least the intelligence.

    I’m honestly not surprised……
My boyfriend gets on 4chan all the time, though he certainly checks it less since we’ve been together. He doesn’t agree with any of the comments or make any himself, he just thinks its “funny.”
Those comments are so stupid, my favorite is the one about having an iq of 125, I took that online iq test too, my score was 130, asshole.
I’m also amazed at how many people can’t spell dyke…..

Holy fuck, does this post really exist? I mean, shit, do you really even know how the other half of the internet operates? Your first mistake is posting these lame-as-fuck talking head videos on Youtube and expecting NOT to get shit on with that contrived tone of indignation. Neil Postman paging youtubers – no blogger gives two licks about watching you bleat on ANY topic when we could just read it here in, oh, one eighth of the time.
Second, if you’ve got any experience at all with youtube, you’d understand that the grammar and consistency across those posts clearly indicates that 4chan, Ebaum’s or SA linked to your video with explicit instructions. Now you moaning about how this is some evil patriarchal conspiracy just sounds silly – save it for the IRLs where it both matters and is legitimately immportant.

    And, to exelizabeth:
This is exactly the kind of sloppy too-serious response that makes me, as a male, roll my eyes back into my head. Sheasy is totally_fucking_right. What’s making some of you look so damn silly is trying to make some deep connection between a coordinated youtube attack and the IRL of institutional sexism, patriarchy, whatever. This is not an important perpeutation of real-life gender issues. It’s youtube comments and the sooner you all stop getting seriously uppity about its heavy ramifications the better. Some poor shit said this:
“Also, these are the kind of people who rape.”
What the fuck connects all these bizarre points in your head? This is such a massive flurry of unmitigated stupidity, and now look, the 4channers are migrating over to enjoy.

No one said all men are rapists. What was said was a reference to how negative, derogatory attitudes toward women are part of the rape culture.
Why don’t you go read the feminism 101 blog, as someone already suggested, or just read the archives here?
You guys really have nothing to add, so far.
Anyone want to play troll bingo? I would make it a drinking game, but have to drive tonight.
Oh, and FTR, every feminist blog I’m aware of is in favor of either entirely abolishing the draft or including women. And we fight for women in combat. And some of us (like me) are ex-mil. So seriously, KMA.

Ahh, Youtube comments, possibly one of the best places to destroy your faith in humanity. ( ) Of course, if you’ve been hit by griefers from 4chan there is little point in taking up argument with them, they care little for their argument, and only for the reponse they provoke. While it may be worthy looking at their reaction in a larger context, engaging them directly is ultimately conter-productive. I must admit, I have a tendency to keep some of my favourite websites on the quiet to avoid letting the trolls in, however with a website such as this, which is largely about advocacy, keeping silent isn’t really an option. (Unfortunately, I’ve also noticed that griefers have a tendency to assume any reaction is a rise.)

Feminists shouldn’t pay any attention to the internet/Youtube, and focus on things deemed more “important” by random, sanctimonious, narcissists?
(I posted a much larger comment about an hour ago, with some rebuttals and links about privilege, that had to be examined for approval before being put on the site. Could an admin trash it instead? There’s no point in it now.)
No one has said that “all men are rapists”. That’s just an anti-feminist trope. You will have to deal with the fact that almost all rapists are male, however. Or not, as it were. But in the meantime, stop playing the victim.
Real feminists won’t hold your poor, little emasculated hand, just so you know.
Btw, shouldn’t you 4-channers get back to getting owned by the CoS? You know, an organization that isn’t *internet* based?

I was trying to point out that youtube and 4chan isn’t the ideal place to spread your message.
I have to disagree on your point about YouTube. I feel that YouTube is a fabulous place to spread a message. Just look at the YouTube debates or the several mini-celebs who got started on YouTube.
4Chan on the other hand? Have to agree with you there, but Jessica wasn’t on 4Chan trying to spread the message of feminism. Nobody was.

SHEASY: “Again, I didn’t come here to defend myself or my beliefs, because this is not about me. I was trying to point out that youtube and 4chan isn’t the ideal place to spread your message.”
Yeah, I have to 100% disagree with you there.
I show youtube clips in my classes all the time, on topics ranging from feminism to animal behavior to evolution of human and behavior. They are great for engaging students attention and sparking debate.
Also, there are lots of great clips that people can analyze and think about. For example, in my class, students are expected to find toy commercials from the 70s, 80s, and present and analyze the gender messages presented.
Finally, the fact that millions of people watch the videos on youtube makes it a great way to spread a message. The fact that some people don’t take it seriously is irrelevant. If the video impacts just 1 person, 100 people, or 10,000 people, it had an effect and a purpose.

It’s weak little trolls who spend their time wanking off to porn sites in the darkest corners of cyberspace, and who threaten women from the safety of their keyboards, that hate women. Much like they hate themselves, and hate their own weakness. It’s only by putting down women, that they can feel any self worth in their pathetic lives.

Oh please, screw off. The internet is not the place for a serious discourse like this, and that’s why most of us aren’t taking it seriously. If this was a group that met in real life, do you really think Jessica would post some trite and stupid rant on youtube criticizing aspects of net culture she clearly doesn’t know anything about?

The tone of your Youtube video was both antagonistic and condescending.
Only if you’re one of those people who gets behind a computer and starts telling everyone to suck your dick and saying nigger, faggot and all that other shit you’d never dream of saying in ‘real life’. Only then is it antagonizing and condescending. If you felt antagonized by it, it’s because you’re one of those people.
I’m really sick of every kid who has a computer thinking it’s cute and original to be a douchebag online. Guess what? IF YOU’RE A DOUCHEBAG ONLINE, YOU’RE STILL BEING A FUCKING DOUCHEBAG. The fact that what you say is read online does not excuse the douchery of it.
Yes, yes, yes, I’ve heard all that shit about doing it for teh lulz (me and the rest of the internet). I know causing drama and being annoying is some people’s idea of a fun-ass time.
The fact they don’t mean half of what they say doesn’t make them less assholeish. I’ve met people like you in real life. I know people like you in real life. Running around being an asshole and pretending it’s a social experiment is the height of pretension. It’s the height of immaturity. It makes you an asshole.
As a long-time user of 4chan(aka the Internet Hate Machine), let me tell you a few things:
Or how about not? Look, I’ve used 4chan before. Being part of the OMG INTERWEB HATE MACHINE doesn’t make you a special little snowflake, nor does it impart to you a special knowledge that must be shared with us. I have four words to describe 4chan: Big fucking time waster.
    2) If this is all you get, count yourself lucky. If they get really revved up about someone or something, the Internet Hate Machine can ruin lives. Look up Tylor King on Encyclopedia Dramatica for an example.
OMG, I’m shaking in my little e-boots! Please don’t hurt us, 4chan! What ever is your evil plan? Are you going to find out our addresses and have USPS mail us a bunch of boxes we don’t need? Will you write rape fiction about us? Will you hack our MySpace accounts? The horror!!!
Seriously though, bring it the fuck on. I really doubt anyone on here is intimidated by 4chan’s bullshit. Take a cue from your fellow internet addicts: The internet isn’t srs bsns.
Half of the feministing users posting in this thread are so woefully and embarassingly ignorant of internet geek culture
