What’s your butt’s ethnicity?

A premium denim company, Fiorana, is has created a “Latina-cut” jean.

“The Latina body is different in waist and hip structure,” says Mike Braden, Founder and President of Fiorana, Inc. “When wearing Anglo cut jeans, there is always a fit problem around the waist area. Our ‘Latina Cut’ collection will provide the American Hispanic woman a sexy, sophisticated premium jean that caters to their feminine curves.”

‘Cause all Latinas look like J-Lo? What? Laura Martinez responds,

Still, reading and re-reading the staggering conclusions of the apparel maker’s internal research among Hispanics, I couldn’t help but wonder: Could it be that the jean maker is simply generalizing about what a Latina body is supposed to look like? Either that or I’m going ...

“Gray rape” myth reaches college media

The Campus Word, an online college media network, has an article up titled, “The Blurry Line Between Sex and Rape,” which talks about a recent sexual assault incident at Boston University and how “for the most part, these kinds of cases with outsiders coming into random dorms, are not the kind of sexual assault/rape incidents that most girls should be worried about. The ones that are most prevalent are normally situations that we can prevent right from the get-go.” The author continues:

Let me paint you another picture. At a frat party, there is a girl scantily clad in a mini skirt (so short, by the way, you can almost see the bottom of her ass), and a tank top ...

More Feministing stories…

Jessica’s been bugging us all for weeks to each record our “Feministing story” about how we came to write for this blog. (See Jessica’s here.) So I took a minute today and recorded mine:

(Yes, it’s very dreary day here. Not that the view out my office window is much cheerier on a sunny day. Woot, downtown DC!)
So now I’ll join Jess in nagging: where’s your video, Vanessa? Samhita? Jen? Courtney? C’mon, ladies!
And for those of you who haven’t subscribed yet, check out our YouTube channel.

The One To Take the Lead

Susan F. Wood, PhD, is Research Professor at the George Washington University School of Public Health and Health Services where her work focuses on the use of scientific knowledge in public policy. She served as Assistant Commissioner for Women’s Health and Director of the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) Office of Women’s Health (OWH) from November 2000 through August 2005. She resigned on principle over the continued delay of approval of emergency contraception over-the-counter by FDA.
Although stories about reproductive health and politicization of science have made headlines recently, stories of how these problems are solved are less often told. On August 31, 2005 I resigned my position as Assistant Commissioner for Women’s Health at the Food and Drug ...

Happy Birthday, Jen!

Our fabulous Jen is celebrating her 29th birthday today. The smart wit and hilarity she brings to Feministing make us extremely grateful to have her. (And since she loves to have fun with adding graphics to pics as much as I do, I thought I’d do the honors this time.)
Give her some birthday love in comments. Happy Birthday Jen, we love you!

Tyra strikes out with bra-burning.

UPDATE: THIS WAS THE WRONG BOOK!!!
So, someone from Seal Press just brought to my attention that the book I quoted was completely wrong and the book that this show was about was actually boobs, by Elisabeth Squires and this show was actually about burning bras that fit, as opposed to having anything to do with breast cancer. See what happens when you don’t watch TV! I still think drawing on the myth of bra-burning to feign female empowerment has to be fleshed out and doesn’t quite work for me. But attacking body dysmorphia and focusing on what fits our body, well that is cool fer shure.
Sorry folks and thanks for keep us bloggers accountable.
Who would argue ...
