Legal protections for trans Massachusetts residents hang in the balance

On Election Day, Massachusetts voters will decide whether or not to uphold an existing anti-discrimination law that protects trans people’s access to public accommodations.

In the latest attack on trans people’s safety, the Trump administration announced that they will assign incarcerated transgender people to prisons based on the sex they were assigned at birth.

The decision was made in response to a lawsuit by a Christian hate group against a 2012 Obama-era guidance that permitted a small number of transgender people to be incarcerated in a prison that matched their gender and allowed some trans people in prison to access gender-affirming hormones and clothing. Chelsea Manning Announces Senate Bid, Asks Us to Dream Bigger

Chelsea Manning is running for Senate in Maryland! And if her announcement video is any indication, her campaign will focus on the progressive causes she champions: prison abolition, trans liberation, and racial and economic justice.

Manning has long been an outspoken critic of oppression and state violence. The tone of her video makes clear that she sees her campaign as an opportunity to discuss issues often seen as too radical for our dominant political parties. Having her in office would mean that marginalized folks have an ally in politics who would take our demands seriously and fight for the most vulnerable.
