Abstinence-only, straight-only education

It seems abstinence-only ed wasn’t crappy enough with its bad science and sexism. The Bush Administration just had to add little more stupid to the pile.

The Administration for Children and Families (ACF)
at the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services recently announced new guidelines for organizations that want funding for their abstinence-only ed programs. May I present…uber-abstinence (for straights only, please):

Abstinence curricula must have a clear definition of sexual abstinence which must be consistent with the following: “Abstinence means voluntarily choosing not to engage in sexual activity until marriage. Sexual activity refers to any type of genital contact or sexual stimulation between two persons including, but not limited to, sexual intercourse.
…Throughout the entire curriculum, the term “marriageâ€? must be defined as “only a legal union between one man and one woman as a husband and wife, and the word ’spouse’ refers only to a person of the opposite sex who is a husband or a wife.â€? (Consistent with Federal law)

So if you’re gay, you get no sex. Ever. Not even some rubbing action, sorry. In fact, in our happy abstinence-only world, you don’t even exist. (Lalalala…I can’t hear you!)

SIECUS was on this way back in February, and I think their analysis is a little more in-depth than Planned Parenthood’s.

Abstinence means voluntarily choosing not to engage in sexual activity until marriage.
What does marriage have to do with anything? It doesn’t protect against unintended pregnancy, STIs, sexual dysfunction, etc.

This all reminds me of a conversation I had with a right-winger a couple of years back.
Him: “Look, I’m not saying it’s celibacy or bust for gays. There’s a tier here. The best option is celibacy; the second best option is protected sex within a lifelong monogamous relationship.”
Me: “If you’re in a lifelong monogamous relationship, why the hell do you have to use protection?”
Him: “Because gay men cheat. The statistics prove it.” (Proceeded to quote Paul Cameron.)

(And he really did say “Gay men.” Lesbians, like all other women who are not dutiful “wives and mothers,” don’t exist.)
