Equal pay for French women; Jessica considers wearing beret

Jacques Chirac has ordered that legislation be created to force companies to pay men and women equal wages. See, now that wasn’t so hard, was it?
After finding out that in some areas women were earning almost 35 percent less than their male counterparts, the French president took decisive action—he promised to restore wage balance within five years:
“Over the last year, I have called for negotiations on the equality between men and women in the workplace…An agreement that established interesting principles and objectives were drawn up. Now we all have to go much further.”
The Guardian reports that Chirac’s proposals for wage equality were met with skepticism from those who said he was simply trying to “curry favor with women voters.” Um, well yeah. Generally, giving women equal rights makes them pretty fucking happy!
But apparently Chirac’s rhetoric may not match reality. Former women’s rights minister for the Socialist party, Yvette Roudy, said that “these laws exist already. All Jacques Chirac has to do is to apply them.”
Hmm…guess only time will tell. But at least he admits that there is a problem with the wage gap, unlike another president I know…
